A TIMELY RESCUE.
Baby Alone in Burning House. NEIGHBOUR GIVES ALARM. Left alone in a house which caught fire, with flames barring the door to rescuers, the two-months-old baby of Mr and Mrs J. Hollis had a narrow escape from death at 22, Bowhill Road, New Brighton, early yesterday afternoon. Firemen effected a rescue by carrying the child through a window. The rescue was made possible through the timely alarm raised by a neighbour. The fire originated in the gas-meter box, where there were a number of papers stored. The heat melted the lead lead-in and then the gas caught, throwing flames across the front door. Neighbours saw the fire and called the New Brighton Volunteer Fire Brigade. The firemen were busy on their task when Mrs Hollis arrived back at the house and told them that her baby was in the room alongside that which was the centre of the blaze. They could not get in through the door of the room, but one of the firemen climbed in through the window and carried the baby out. The house was only slightly damaged. The house is owned by Mr F. W. Freeman.
