PROVINCIAL ATHLETIC TITLES.

Good Times are Recorded in Drizzling - Rain. BRILLIANT HALF-MILE BY BROADWAY.

ON A TRACK that rolled out well despite a continuous drizzling rain, the cream of Canterbury’s athletes made good times at Lancaster Park this afternoon, when the provincial titles were decided under the auspices of the Canterbury Centre of the N.Z.A.A. The conditions made taking off in the hurdles, jumping and field events difficult, and caused cycling events to he abandoned. Some remarkably fine performances were put up, notably in the 880yds championship, which

was carried off brilliantly by T. G. Broadway in lmin 56 4-ssec, two seconds short of the best time ever credited to any previous New Zealand runner over the distance. The holder of the title, O. C. Harley (Varsity) finished in third place. G. F. Hart was fully extended in the 100yds championship, but he managed to retain the title.

There were many withdrawals from the 120yds hurdles championship, only F. C. Barwell (C.A.A.C.), F. R. Askin (Varsity) and E. G. Young (Varsity) going to the mark. The field got away from a good start, Barwell taking the lead. Young clapped on the pace over the closing stages and was up with Barwell at the last hurdle, when he fell. Barwell went on to win by five yards. Broadway’s Great Kun. T. G. Broadway (C.A.A.C.) is the new Canterbury half-mile champion. He won his title in brilliant style. Broadway went to the front from the gun, setting a rattling pace. W. Gilmour (Varsity) was in second place, followed by O. C- Harley (Varsity) and D. F. Anderson (Varsity). Anderson ran into third place along the back straight on the first time round. Broadway had the lead from Andersen into the straight and between this pair there was a great battle to the tape. Anderson challenged strongly, but the leader mustered up an amazing burst of speed to put up the second fastest time ever recorded by a New Zealander over this distance. Anderson was four feet behind him, with last year’s champion, Harley, in third place. Held for the first time this year, the half-mile walk proved an easy thing for J. M. Ollivier (C.A.A.C.), who outdistanced Holmes, the only other competitor, by forty yards. Bart Collects Short Sprint. The 100yds final created no surprise, but the titleholder, G. F. Hart (C.A.A.C.) had to exert every muscle to win. The early heats were covered in 10 2-ssec, which also proved to be the time for the final. The 'six finalists got out of the holes smartly for an even start, and at fifty yards wore close together, with Hart having a slight advantage on his most serious rival, C. G. Gordon (Sydenham). J. M’Farlane (O.B.) was in close attendance. The last fifty yards was covered at a fast clip, and Hart staved off a stout challenge by Gordon to win by a foot and a half. A yard separated second and third. Hart Wins Again. Hart (C.A.A.C.) srcred a double in the sprint events when he headed M'Fariand (Old Boys) to the tape by inches in the 220yds championship. Hart had thelead into the straight, but at the tape was being overhauled rapidly by both M’Farlane and Cox. Carmichael (Old Boys), who beat Hart at the preliminary meeting' a fortnight ago, did not start in the final. A field of three stepped out for the mile walk in which Ollivier (C.A.A.C.), winner of the half-mile earlier in the afternoon, brought off a double victory, beating A. A. Gudsell (Old Boys) by twenty yards. H. G. Holmes (Technical) was 100yds away. Broadway Shines Again. The finalists for the quarter-mile title were T. G. Broadway (C.A.A.C.), M. A. Blackmore (C.A.A.C.), L>. F. Anderson (Varsity) and O. C. Harley (Varsity). They comprised the finest held that has ever gone down to the mark in this event at a Canterbury championship meeting. As expected the race proved L>ne of the most thrilling spectacles of the meeting. Broadway and Blackmore battled out a neck and heck race down the straight and reached, the tape almost together. Broadway, who had registered a wonderful run in the half-mile event, was again the winner. Last year’s champion, Harley, was disposed of fifty yaxds from home. Anderson appeared to be suffering from the strain of the half-mile and was left well behind. Considering the conditions under which the race was run Broadway’s time of 50 4-5 secs was outstanding. He is one of the greatest runners Canterbury has produced. An unknown quantity at the beginning of the season, he has risen in the space of a few months right to the front rank. B. F. Anderson (Varsity) made no race of it in the 4 40yds hurdles, winning his itle easily from last year’s winner, L. G. Willis (Sydenham), who was second. Surprise in Mile. A surprise was sprung by A. Kane, a ine stamp of runner from Waimate, in the one mile championship, which attracted eleven entries. Running well within himself, and with rhythmic action, he staved off a stout challenge by W. L. Sargison, the Sydenham hope, to win by two yards in the splendid . time of 4.29 4-5—2 4-ssec outside the N'ew Zealand standard. In the early stages of the race the field was well strung out. #-Ith C. S. Ell (Sumner) shewing the way to W. V. Dromgoole (Technical), Kane, A. Mather (Christchurch), M. R. Robinson and R. M. Barrer, the Varsity pair. Going out for the. third time, Ell was still running strongly out in front, with Kane closely ->n his heels, followed by Barrer. Mather, Robinson and Dromgoc-le. At the bell Robinson was leading Barrer, and had mproved his position with a spurt along the back. Kane was moving along smoothly in third place. Along the back ‘tretch, the pace was clapped on, and the gc-ing proved too hot for Robinson, md it was seen that honours rested between Kane, who shot to the front, Sareison, who had run a well judged race md had held a good position throughout, ind Barrer. Turning into the straight, sargison drew alwost level with Kane. The latter, however, held on gamely, a nd came away to snap the worsted two cards ahead of Sargison. The sprint up he straight found Barrer out. and he nished eight yards further back. Matthews (Technical), who was picked is . a certainty on the strength of his jreat run of 4min 30 l-sseo and the nter-seeondary school championships ast October, did not start owing to a swollen ankle. Tn winning the 100 yards womens’ title. Miss K. Callinan got her reward V>r consistent effort during the season, ’he has shown steady improvement and ier victory was looked for as one of he sure features of the meeting. She J?w in two yards ahead of Miss M. The junior 100yds championship prov*d art easy thing for .T. D. Carmichael, he Old Boys colt. He led throughout, ihd won by two yards from Dickinson, >f Ashburton. Results:— HALF-MILE WALK. J. M. Ollivier (C.A.A.C.) 1 H.
