NOTES ON THE RACING.

With Donalda the only scratching, eighteen went to the post for the Motukarara Juvenile Stakes. The totalisator total vras small but was fairly evenly divided. Nobody, however, cared to invest on Star Raider and there was only one ticket on Irish Lady. Execution (£52 10s) and Berate (£4l) were the most popular fancies. Iceni essayed to lead all the way but went very wide entering the straight and left Berate, Metal Bird and Execution in charge. Berate forged ahead near home and won by half a length from Dutch Princess. Metal Bird was a fair third followed by Fearsome, Execution and Iceni. The winner is owned and trained by her breeder, G. Murray Avnsley, and this was only her second start. She is a half sister to Chide and Riri. Berate is by Silverado, sire of Silver Ring and Silver Scorn, both of whom were bred by Murray Aynsley. Backers found the result of the Tarawera Jligh-weight Handicap unpalatable. They declared for Elude [ .(£lB4 10s) and Adult (£126), The win-

ner turned up in the tenth favourite, Night Recital, who carried only £36 10s. The winner had been so disappointing that after the recent meeting at Riccarton, trainer E. M’Lennan returned him to his owner and breeder, Mr F. T. Buchanan. Night Recital was always handy in this race. He was second to Pixie Gold entering the straight with Elude, Countermarch, Ma Belle Polly, and Adult next. Night Recital and Pixie Gold had a great battle in the straight. Night Recital winning by a head with Elude two lengths away third. After a gap came Adult. Taragona, and Ma Belle Polly. Before reaching the three furlong post. Night Flyer stumbled and threw his rider, D. Cotton, over the rails. Cotton escaped serious injury.

Taragona was interfered with after going about 100 yards in the Tarawera High-weight. An inquiry was held into the incident. After hearing evidence from several riders, the stewards decided that there was not sufficient evidence to connect any particular rider with causing interference. It was decided, however, that the chairman, Mr R. M. Morten, should warn all riders about crowding. With ten scratchings for the Wairewa Handicap Trot, twenty-five were still left to contest the event. Midnight Sun was favourite with £155 10?, Edna Worthy being second choice with £127 10s. The old axiom of the bigger the field the greater the certainty worked out as the favourites were fir*t home in the correct order. Edna Worthy led past the judges the first time from Te Kingi, Wild Guy, and Elsie De Oro. The last-named took charge a little further on, but five furlongs from home Betty Axworthy assumed command. Betty Axworthy led round the home turn and into the straight from Edna Worthy and Midnight Sun. In the run home Midnight Sun put in his claim and won comfortably from Edna Worthy and Betty Axworthy. Te Kingi was fourth with Vesta Ray and Wild Guy next.

Ramo was a pronounced favourite for the Peninsula Cup, carrying £279, while Minerval, the second choice, was entrusted with £l5B 10s. Riri would not go into his proper place, and when the barrier went up he lost a little ground. Azalia took up the pacemaking from Juniper, Ramo. Don Jose and Martian Chief. Adelphi moved forward smartly and took the lead as they came to the back stretch. Azalia hung on to him and they opened up a fair break, with Don Jose and Minerval ahead of the pursuers. Adelphi was done with as they came to the home turn, and Azalia led into the straight from Riri, Ramo, and Martian Chief. Ramo asserted himself in the run home and won decisively from Juniper, Azalia and Riri. Locksley, Don Jose and Minerval followed.

Sir R. Heaton Rhodes, patron of the Banks Peninsula Racing Club, presented the trophy to J. B. Pearson, trainer and part owner of the winner, who was decorated with the blue ribbon. Ramo won the Rangiora Cup in October, and Pearson also won the Geraldine Cup with Royal Love in September.

Nigger head was bred and raced by Mr T. 11. Lowry, of Hawke’s Bay, until the end of January, and was then sold to Mr A. Foster, of Oamaru, but went into the Riccarton stables of A. Barr. Going out seventh choice with £l4O 10s, Niggerhead had his first Sofith Island victory in the Ahuriri Hack Handicap. The favourites were Weatherly £294, and Hystride £209 10s. Lochlaggan made most of the running, with Niggerhead always well placed. Lochlaggan reached the straight ahead of Fearsome, Niggerhead, High Tor, Weatherly and Sailor’s Love. Lochlaggan and Niggerhead had a keen duel over the last furlong, and Niggerhead won by a neck, with Weatherly a length away. High Tor, Pakitere, Hystride, and Sailor’s Love were next.

LITTLE RAIN FALLS,

Warm Wraps and Tweeds Essential. Many keen racing people were dieappointed at the change In the w’eather this morning, for the Banks Peninsula Racing Club’s summer meeting at Motukarara is always a popular one for those favouring a day in the country. Those motoring from Christchurch were undecided as to venturing for the day, as there is little shelter in the stands for the onlookers. However, those who did were more than pleased, for there had been little rain at Motukarara, and a pleasant day’s sport was experienced. The cold, unpleasantly windy day, however, brought the fair enthusiasts to the course wrapped in heavy coats, furs and tweed suits. The fair racegoers in their trim sports suits, berets and brogues add to the sporting atmosphere of a country meeting. Many of the people, finding It rather cold in the roofless stand, and not wishing to miss any of the racing, watched from their cars, enjoying the contents of luncheon hampers and chatting to their friends. Among those present were: Mr Walter Parkinson (president <of the Banks Peninsula Racing Club) and Mrs Parkinson, the latter wearing a smart black crepe de chine frock under a black faced cloth

coat trimmed with fur, and a black Bangkok straw hat.
