LYTTELTON NEWS
Swimmers Succeed Over Long Journeys. Some long-distance swimming was undertaken last week by three Lyttelton swimmers, A. Ereckson, J. Crawford and L. Combes. The first swim was from Corsair Bay to Quail Island and back. * There was a light southeast wind when the swimmers took to the water and shortly before completing half the distance they encountered a strong south-west wind. The sea became choppy and they had to contend with an outgoing tide. Quail Island was reached in three-quarters of an hour. After inspecting the island the swimmers made the return trip in a little over half-an-hour. They stated that the water was on the cold side until the wind changed to the south-west, when the water seemed to become warmer. When returning, they had the assistance of wind and tide. On Sunday Ereckson and Crawford, notwithstanding a strong easterly wind and rough sea, swam from Corsair Bay to the ferry launch jetty in the inner harbour and back. They left Corsair Bay at 9.40 and swam to the jetty and back without a rest in lhr 55min. Garden Party at Charteris Bay. Amateur gardeners and lovers of unusual plants and trees will have an opportunity of inspecting many native and semi-tropical trees on the estate
of Mr R. Orton Bradley at Charteris Bay on Saturday on the occasion of the annual garden party held in aid of the Governor’s Bay and Teddington Church funds.
