DOCTOR CHARGED.
Alleged to have been Intoxicated in Car. REMAND AGREED TO. John Ebenezer Kelly Brown, a doctor, aged forty-five, residing in Stanmore Road, was charged in the Magistrate’s Court this morning with being in a state of intoxication while in charge of a motor-car in Hereford Street on Monday evening. He was remanded to appear on January 14, bail being alowed in the sum of £25 and one surety of £25. “ There are some curious circumstances which will have to come before the Cotirt,” said counsel in asking for a remand. Counsel said that Brown was in Lewisham Hospital suffering from pneumonia. He had been in bed on Sunday and part of the day on Monday, getting up to attend to urgent cases. He received an urgent call to St George’s Hospital, and took some “ dope,” bromide and certain other things to straighten himself up. He was given one small glass of port wine. The doctor would say that on the Monday he was more or less in a state of delirium. He was arrested about 5 p.m., and at 9 p.m. one would have said that he showed signs of intoxication, but this morning even more so owing to his illness.
Senior-Sergeant Fox said that while not accepting the suggestion that Browui was not intoxicated, he would have applied for a remand himself. Brown was seen by Dr Scott and Dr Widdowson last evening, and was bailed out by Dr Scott.
