COMPENSATION CLAIM.

Sequel to Employee’s Death at Twine Works. Compensation amounting to £IOOO was claimed from the Andrews Twine Company, Waikuku, in the Arbitration Court to-day by Annie Yaxley, widow, Sydenham, for the loss of her husband, Arthur Yaxley, who died on May 16 from septic pneumonia arising from chest and lung injuries sustained through being caught in a scutching machine in the course of his employment. In addition to plaintiff being wholly dependent upon deceased, it was claimed that a grandson, Leslie Miles Harwood Mellor, was also totally dependent upon him. The defence was a general denial of the allegations of the plaintiff and in particular of the allegation that the grandson was totally or partially dependent upon deceased. Mr Justice Frazer presided. Associated with him were Messrs W. Cecil Prime, employers’ representative, and A. L. Monteith, employees’ assessor. Counsel for the defence said that it was impossible for the plaintiff to have been wholly dependent upon her husband because of the scantiness of the amounts he contributed to her support. Witnesses were called to support counsel’s argument. Plaintiff was awarded £338 compensation and expenses.
