DRIVER REBUKED.
Fined £lO for Failing to Report Accident. MAGISTRATE’S REMARKS. “ When a man tries to lie his way out of an offence the way this man has done he can only expect severe punishment,” said Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., when Donald Cameron Dorrance appeared before him this morning charged with failing to report an accident. He fined the defendant £lO and costs, payment to be made within fourteen days, in default distress, and in default of distress one month’s imprisonment. Dorrance was convicted and discharged for driving on the wrong side of the road and for parking on the wrong side of the street. Senior-Sergeant Fox said that the defendant had travelled on the wrong side of the road, and had injured a boy. He later tried to mislead the police in their inquiries. “ It seems that a man of such an unscrupulous nature is a danger on the road in charge of a car,” concluded the senior-sergeant. Counsel asked that the defendant’s license should not be taken away, as his livelihood depended on it. He asked for leniency. “ I am strongly of opinion that a man who assists the police in making inquiries or assists a person injured is worthy of consideration,” declared Mr Mosley. " But a man who obstructs the course of justice can only expect the condemnation of the Court; certainly not its sympathy. A man who tries to lie his way out of an offence the way this man has done can only expect severe punishment.”
