Sir Eric Ilambro, a director of the Great Eastern Railway Company, at a luncheon in honour of Commendatore Pietro Salerni, who developed a process for the low temperature carbonisation of coal, expressed his confidence in the Salerni system. He had decided himself to shoulder the responsibility ior the provision of the initial funds for the development of the system, which promised not only to restore prosperity to the British mining industry, but also to rid the country of smoke and create a home supply of oil and motor fuels.
