Canterbury Centre to Hold Carnival. BIG PROGRAMME TO-NIGHT. The Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association will hold its opening carnival at the Tepid Baths to-night. The programme, which is an extremely attractive one, includes the primary schools’ Yaldhurst Shield contest, for which nine schools have entered. This shield, which is for a series of races, always provides excellent racing. The men’s half-mile championship of Canterbury will be fought out by the province’s best swimmers and attracts special interest by reason of its being the first appearance of D. P. Lindsay since his return to Christchurch. Stokes will have to produce his best form to retain his title. During the evening D. H. Symes, who, recently, in an unofficial attempt, equalled the Canterbury record for fifty yards, will attempt to lower the record in an official attempt. The handicap event has attracted a good entry and some exciting racing is assured. An exhibition of diving will be given by the Diving Troupe. The programme will conclude with a water polo match between two picked teams. SURF ASSOCIATION. Competition Allocated by Centre. A meeting of the Canterbury Surf Life Saving Association was held last evening, W. H. Benson presiding. The Canterbury Head Centre wrote asking for an expression of opinion on the suggestion to send a surf team to Sydney at the time of the optening of the harbour bridge. A circular from the New Zealand Council was enclosed, stating that, failing a Dominion team, a club team might make the trip. It was decided that no action be taken by thfe association, although clubs would be notified of the suggestion as regards club teams. Mr F. D. Kesteven wrote accepting the office of patron and enclosed a donation of £2 2s. The Sumner Club was given permission to send a team to St Clair, Dunedin, for a demonstration. Competitions were allocated as follows:—Kesteven Cup, Taylor’s Mistake; Black and White Cup, Taylor’s Mistake; Boulton Cup, Waimairi: Newburgh Shield, South Brighton; beltmen’s championship.
