The Rev P. J. Cocks is the guest of Mr H. A. Bruce, Cashmere Hills, prior to his departure for England.

Messrs A. C. Morrison (Blenheim) and T. E. Rogers (Wellington) are guests at the Royal Hotel.

A motion of sympathy was passed by the Lewisham Hospital Fete Committee, at its meeting on Saturday, with Mr and Mrs J. J. Ardagh in the death of their son.

Mr Graeme Burns, son of Mr A. M. Burns, of Christchurch, has received advice that he has passed the medical intermediate examination of the University of New Zealand. Mr Burns, who left Christ’s College last year, is a student at the Medical School at Dunedin, and was in residence during the past year at Knox College. Mr J. N. Neville, who has been postmaster at Lyttelton during the past six years, will retire from the service at the end of the present week. Mr Neville joined the Post and Telegraph Department at*Lyttelton in 1892 as a messenger. He was transferred later to Kaikoura as a cadet and returned to Lyttelton as a telegraphist. Mr Neville was next promoted to the position of supervisor in the Christchurch office. He also served in a similar capacity in Wellington. It is Mr Neville’s intention to reside in Lyttelton. Mr A. W. Gent, of the head office of the P. and O. Company; Mr W. W. Service, passenger superintendent of Macdonald, Hamilton and Co., managing agents for the P. and O. Company for Australia and New Zealand; Mr E. A. Lamb, passenger superintendent of Gilchrist, Watt and Sanderson, Ltd., managing agents for the P. and O. branch service; and Mr C. N. Harbottle, passenger manager for the New Zealand Shipping Company, passed through Christchurch yesterday on a tour of New Zealand. They will visit Timaru, Dunedin, Queenstown, Pembroke and Mount Cook before returning to Christchurch next Monday. In order to recognise the services rendered to the Mount Pleasant district by Mr A. G. Williams, as representative of the riding on the Heathcote County Council, a stone was laid in the newlyconstructed wall on Edenhill Road, overlooking the Domain Reserve at Mount Pleasant on Saturday afternoon. The president of the Mount Pleasant Burgesses’ Association (Mr H. Edgar) referred to the invaluable work carried out by Mr Williams during his term of office. Mr Edgar called on Mr Williams to lay the stone, and for this purpose handed him a silver trowel, presented by an anonymous lady ratepayer. The stone is inscribed: " This stone was laid by Councillor A. G. Williams, 1931.” It was provided and inscribed by Mr W. R. Webb.
