"DIANA'S DIARY"

Friday, the Thirteenth. has played a strong hand in the lives of men and women for centuries past, but its power has dwindled in modern times until in every direction we find it set up in defiance. A pretty Christchurch bride yesterday was followed by a retinue of maids in dainty green frocks, despite the superstition that green is unlucky for brides. PEOPLE would think twice about trying their luck on the thirteenth, but when that date falls on a Friday how many more would bow their heads to the little god of superstition. Yet I hear that at least one group in Christchurch are prepared to defy the fates. Thev have planned a dance for Friday, November 13, and they hope, despite the unlucky day, to raise a large sum of money to help needy patients at the Sanatorium. Ankles—Before and Now. J WAS SURPRISED to read recently of an ankle-competition at a beach carnival. In fact, it gave me quite a shock, not, as j;ou will at once realise, because ankles * were to be exhibited, but that they should actually excite enough interest to justify a competition. In the days when skirts vied with crossing sweepers for taking mud off the streets, the ankle was a subject of some curiosity. If feminine modesty permitted such things as competitions for beauty of a. kle in those days, no doubt the event was a novelty full of piquant interest. But now, when 99 out of 100 ankles are permanently visible—well, why the contest in ankles? DIANA.
