OBITUARY.
JAMES HAMPTON. (Special to the “Star”). ASHBURTON, October 1. The death of Mr James Hampton at Tinwald this week removes another of the early settlers in the Ashburton County where he was well known. He was born in County Armagh, Ireland, in 1848 and came to New Zealand in the ship Charlotte Gladstone. In 1874 he arrived in Ashburton and took up farming, spending the greater part of his time in the Tinwald district. In 1899 he purchased “Grove Farm” at Tinwald where he made his home. He was a keen supporter of sports clubs and also took an active interest in local bodies. Mr Hampton was formerly a member of the Tinwald Town and Domain boards, the long defunct Tinwald Racing Club, the Tinwald Sports Club and District School Committee. He was at one time a member of the Ashburton A. and P. Association and the Ashburton Club and M.S.A. lie was a life member of the Thistle Lodge of Freemasons. His wife predeceased him by about three years. lie leaves three daughters. Misses M. J., A. E., and A. C. Hampton, of Tinwald and four sons, Messrs R. J., T. C.. and H. E. Hampton, of Tinwald, and Mr G. H. Hampton, of Rangitata.
