BETS ON NATIONAL.
Timaru Man fined Maximum Amount. A HOME MADE CHART. (Special to the " Star.”) TIMARU, August 20. Caught in the act of exhibiting a double chart on the Grand National races at Christchurch. Raymond Quinn, described by Inspector Bird as a reputed bookmaker who did no other work, was fined the maximum, £2O. and costs, by Mr C. R. Orr-Walker, S.M., to-day. Mr G. J. Walker, who appeared for Quinn, said that the chart was a rough, home-made affair, more for “silver” bettors. There were other men in a big way whom the police did not catch. Quinn was only in a small way. Inspector Bird: They are all small when they are caught. Mr Walker: The offence was committed when betting was in the air. Even the Government was getting thousands from it that week. The Magistrate: When a man does that and it is not proved that he is an innocent youth led astray, I can see no reason to reduce the maximum fine.
