ROUND THE SUBURBS

S®SiEISISISISIEIS!@S@IS3S]SISSISi9 Papanui Roads. Mr T. A. Gates presided at last night’s meeting of the Papanui Progress League. The City Council wrote stating that the request for the permanent sealing of Watford Street, Hawthorne Road, Langdon’s Road and Loftus Street could not be granted under the roading loan as the schedule of roads to be repaired had been submitted to the Local Bodies Loan Board and could not be altered. However, when money was available, these roads would be considered. Mr W. G. Chapman said that the league had strongly protested when £19.000 of the £220,000 roading loan was spent on Ferry Road. In this case Ferry Road was not included in the loan schedule. How could an alteration be made in one case and not in the other? It was decided to appoint a deputation consisting of Messrs W. J. Boyce, T. A. Gates, W. G. Chapman and J. Sturrock to wait on the Works Committee of the City Council in regard to the matter. Papanui Road Lighting. At last night’s meeting of the Papanui Progress League, Mr J. Sturrock reported on the lighting of Papanui Road. He said that a scrutiny of the lighting map of Christchurch had proved that Papanui Road had an equal number of lights compared with similar roads. In addition, Councillor Thurston, with another councillor, had paid a visit to Papanui Road one evening and could not find any fault with the lighting. Later, a comparison of Papanui Road lighting with that in Colombo Street, south of Moorhouse Avenue, was asked for. It was found that from Bealey Avenue to Proctor Street, in Papanui Road, there were forty-three lamps in 174 chain, whereas from Moorhouse Avenue to the Heathcote River on Colombo Street, there were thirty-eight lamps in 115 chain. Mr Sturrock said he had made further enquiries and found that the lighting of streets was not governed by the amount of motor traffic, but by the number of pedestrians and the number of houses. Council officials had stated that if there were any dark places these could be rectified. The trees, no doubt, interfered with the lighting of Papanui Road. Mr Tillman said that according to Mr Sturrock’s figures, Colombo Street south had a light every three chains and Papantti Road had a light every four chains. It was left to a further meeting to get definite figures as to the spacing of the lights on Papanui Road. Opawa Mothers’ Union. The Opawa branch of the Mothers’ Union met recently, Mrs H. W. Smith presiding. The meeting took the form of a jam afternoon in aid of Nurse Maude’s fund. The speaker was Miss H. Park, Sunday School organiser, who gave an interesting address on “Religion in the Home.” Flower Show. Bevan, Miss Revan. Messrs Turner, Larcombe, R. Bean and E. A. Robinson. It was decided to hold the show on October 3,

and a schedule was drawn up. It was decided to write to Mr D. G. Sullivan (Mayor of Christchurch) and Mr J. H. Shaw (Mayor of New Brighton), inviting them to be present. It was agreed to ask the following to act as judges:— Mr J. Young (flowers, etc), Mr H. Hawker (cooking), Mrs Bergh (fancy work). j.j j.* Stanmore Silver Band. A public meeting of those interested in the Stanmore Silver Band was held last evening, Mr S. J. Gearv presiding. It was decided to investigate the possibilities of holding a fortnightly concert in the Richmond Methodist School. The question of dances was also discussed and the matter was leit in the hands of Mr E. Hazelhurst. After discussion it was decided to hold another meeting next week when, at the conclusion of the business, a social would be held. The following committee was elected:—Messrs D. M’Crae, A. Warren, E. E. Taylor, E. Hazelhurst, A. Evans, L. Harris. J. A. M’Grath. E. W. George. E. A. Cunningham, Kimber. J. Powell and J. W. Gosney; Mesdames Tavlor and Harris and Misses Taylor and Harrison. Mr W. J.
