Temuka Relief Depot Closes Down. STILL HAS CREDIT BALANCE (Special to the “ Star.”) TEMUKA, August 19. The Central Relief Committee met last evening in the Borough Council Chambers, the Mayor (Mr A. W. Buzan) presiding over an excellent attendance. The Mayor stated that the meeting had been called to consider closing the depot which had been in operation during the winter for the distribution of clothing and other articles for use among the needy. It had been suggested that the depot be closed at the end of the present month, but there was a little money in hand and it was for the meeting to decide what to do with it. Mr W. F. Evans submitted a report on behalf of the finance committee. Some time ago it had been considered advisable to start a competition to raise funds, but no further decision had been come to on account of it being likely that the depot would be closed. it were decided not to close, then the finance committee would continue to go on in the direction of raising money. The treasurer (Miss Ferguson) gave a detailed statement of accounts showing that the committee still had a sum of £ll 14s 3d in hand. Miss G. Brown, for the investigation committee, reported that in all fortyfive cases had been investigated. In ever)’- case families of the destitute had been well supplied with what necessaries they required. During the last few weeks Miss Brown said there had been no fresh applications for relief which was a proof in itself that the needy people were getting on much -better than before. 'Miss Brown advocated closing the depot for the summer months. The president of the Progress League, Mr F. C.' May, considered that the depot had served a good purpose. He moved that the depot be closed for the summer months, and not be re-opened unless it were found necessary. The motion was seconded by Miss Brown and carried. The Mayor -with Misses Brown and Ferguson were appointed an executive* committee to deal with the funds in hand. A vote of thanks was passed to all who had assisted in the relief of distress either by donations or in other ways, it being understood that the depot will be closed at no distant date.
