MORE RIOTING IN ULSTER
Protestants and Catholics at Loggerheads. United Press Assn.—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. LONDON, August 19. The Belfast correspondent of “The Times states that rioting was twice renewed in Armagh last night. mob. of five hundred Republicans gathered in an attempt to rush the Unionist area. The police kept them off with baton charges until they were reinforced. Later, the Republicans attacked the house of the head constable, Mr Reid, and smashed the windows. In the meantime Catholic families in the Protestant area, and Protestants in the Catholic districts were forced to abandon their dwellings. Extra police are patrolling the affected district in motor-lorries keeping order. At Portadown and other small towns the public houses were closed at seven o’clock in the evening. Employers of labour have threatened to close their factories in the event of further trouble. IRISH FREE STATE TO ACT. DUBLIN, August 19. The Minister of Justice, Mr Fitzgerald Kenny, has announced that the Government of the Free State intends to stamp out the Republican Army, and to stop illegal drilling.
