MEETINGS.
Canterbury Federation of Women’s Institute. A meeting of the Canterbury Federation of Women’s Institutes was held on Tuesday. Mrs L. Williams (president) was in the chair. There were also present Mesdames G. A. M. Macdonald, P. N. Ilislop, Chisnall, Marshall, E. Hannah, W. Cook, and Misses Wathell, Fergusson and A. T. Williams. Miss E. Templer resigned the secretaryship owing to temporary absence and it was agreed to send a letter expressing appreciation of her work with a hope that she would resume the work on her return. Miss A. Williams was elected acting secretary. • A number of competitions were arranged for the half yearly meeting, these to include a pull-over cardigan and pair of socks from New Zealand wool and a pair of moccasins and a pair of gloves from New Zealand skins. With a view to encouraging play readings in institutes it was agreed to form a library of suitable plays, these to be lent out at a small charge. Miss Ferguson, of Temuka, was elected librarian. For the half-yearly meeting it was agreed to invite two delegates from each branch, to invite the Geraldine Women's Institute to stage a play and to ask Mrs Mills, of St Andrews, to give a talk on drama. The county dance and social is to beheld on September 25 and Miss Ferguson and Miss Kennedy and party from Christchurch will control the dances. On behalf of the Beautifying Association Mrs Hislop agreed to help with thp arrangements and it was agreed to invite the Geraldine High School to give a demonstration dance. . Y.W.C.A. Board of Directors. The monthly meeting of the Board of Directors of the Y.W.C.A. was held on Monday, those present including Mesdames Turnbull (in the chair), Warren, Lester, Iland-Newton. Machin. Wilson, Mosley, Speight, Meddings, Sheate, Abernethy, M’Leod, Miss Kirk and the general secretary. The news of the appointment of Miss Jean Stevenson as national secretary for New Zealand was received with pleasure. Some time was spent in discussing the subjects that were to come before the meetings of the National Board in Wellington next week. Subjects under consideration will be disarmament, unemployment and changing standards of life for youth. It was reported that the Rev D. Gardner Miller had consented to give an address at the annual meeting on September 29. The Senior Club Department reported the formation of a new Girls’ Club and a busy month for all members. The Federation Council was making plans for an old girls’ reunion in the near future. The Girls’ Department reported with regret the resignation of Mrs Meredith-Kaye from their committee. Members had been busy working on material for Dominion Girl Citizen Magazine. A successful barrow fair was held at Lyttelton and an old-time d#nce was planned. It was reported that the work among unemployed girls still continued and a considerable number were using the building while waiting for employment.
