LAWN TENNIS ASSOCIATION.
A. C. Stedman Heads Men’s Ranking List. The annual report of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association, to be submitted to the council of the association on August 28, gives a good indication of the popularity of lawn tennis in New Zealand. The report contains a carefully-com-piled list of the affiliated associations and clubs, with their officers and memberships. The total membership of the association is 29,318, which is an increase of 628 over last year’s total. In tefi years the association’s membership has increased by 6586. Included in the report is a list of the winners of New Zealand championships since 1886, the winners of challenge trophies since the dates of their inception, and a large complete list of the winners of open championships played in district tournaments during the past year. The official ranking list will be received with interest. A. C. Stedman, of Auckland, heads the men’s list, with D. G. France, C. Angas, N. R. C. Wilson, E. L. Bartleet, Dr Laurenson, L. France, H. A. Barnett, T. W. Patterson and N. G. Sturt following in the order named For the ladies, Mrs H. M. Dykes—now resident in Wellington—heads the list, with Miss D. Nicholls, Mrs R. P. Adams, Miss M. Macfarlane, Miss B. Knight, Mrs Wellwood, Mrs Melody, Miss M. Wake, Miss J. Ramsay and Mrs Thomson filling the other nine places. The report records the association’s loss by the deaths of Messrs H. M. Gore and S. A. Longuet during the past year. The balance-sheet shows a very sound financial position, and the increased expenditure anticipated during the coming year should not cause any concern to the members of the association.
