CHICHESTER IN JAPAN.
Will Continue Flight to
America. United Press Assn.—By ElectHc Telegraph—Copyright. TOKIO, August 14. Mr F. C. Chichester left Kagoshima at 10.25 o’clock this morning, en route to Kasumigura naval airfield, fifty miles northward of Tokio. He refuelled on the Katsuura Coast 100 miles south of Osaka and arrived at Kasumigura at 7 p.m., when he was welcomed by the Japanese naval authorities. He will leave for Tokio to-morrow. Mr Chichester will rest for a few days before proceeding to America, via the Kuriles and Alaska. Although last evening’s examination failed to explain clearly the reasons of the delay in his flight from Shanghai, the authorities allowed Mr Chichester to continue, reserving further inquiries until later. Mr Chichester took off from Shanghai for Kagoshima, Japan, at 8.15 a.m. on Thursday. He landed there at 7 p.m. Because he required ten hours to make the flight, which ordinarily takes five, the local authorities questioned Mr Chichester to determine whetbei he had landed en route.
After flying from New Zealand, Mr Chichester left Sydney on July 3 for Darwin, where he took off on a flight to England, via Japan, North America and Greenland. On his arrival at Manila, in the Philippines, on July 17, he found that the Japanese authorities would not grant him permission to fly over certain parts of Japan included in his itinerary. This caused some delay, and he was not able to get away until August 3. He landed at Formosa on August 5 and reached Shanghai on August 7.
