To Correspondents . Small Business.—A person paying rent by cheque or otherwise is entitled to demand a receipt, and if one is refused an offence against the Stamp Duties Act is committed. All receipts for payments of £2 and over must l>ear a twopenny stamp.
To Correspondents. H O.—All overseas vessels have to anchor until they are passed by the health officer, and in a case such as you mention the vc - sel might be quarantined. The Straits of Magellan are at the southernmost point of South America. A vessel going to Colombo through the Malacca Strait would find Singapore right in its track, but Batavia is 535 miles south of Singapore. Can you give the vessel’s starting point? S
