BRIDGE WORK HELD UP.
Construction of Main Trunk Railway. BOARD’S DECISION AWAITED Until the Railway Board makes known its decision in regard to the construction of the South Island Main Trunk railway between Parnassus and Wharanui, no steps are being taken by the Public Works Department in connection with the erection of the bridges over the Leader and Conway Rivers. Meanwhile about 300 men are actively engaged on formation work at the Parnassus end, and a survey party, under Mr A. Stewart, location engineer fbr the Department .is at work between the mouth of the Conway River and the Kahautara River, about five miles south of Kailcoura. Formation work is in hand on the first sixteen miles north of Parnassus, 1 and approximately 900 chains out of a total of 1280 chains has been completed The uncompleted work includes the big cutting through the Havvkeswocd Saddle, but a start has been made there with two steam shovels. This work, which will take more than a year to complete, represents the principal obstacle on the first section of the line.
