ROUND THE SUBURBS

New Brighton School. At the monthly meeting of the New Brighton School Committee, held last evening, Mr W. Sexton presided. The resignation of Miss L. Broom was received with regret. The chairman reported that a picture benefit had been arranged and the tickets were selling readily. Several of the members of the committee advocated that the children’s sand playground be filled in, clayed and gravelled. However, on the motion of Mr A. E. Robinson, it was decided to approach the Education Board to raise the ground with more sand. The chairman reported that as the result of a meeting of the New Brighton, Aranui, North Beach and Burwood School Committees it had been thought that instead of making a levy to cover the expenses of the dental clinic, a combined concert should be held to try to raise sufficient funds. It was decided to make arrangements to organise a combined concert and also to send circulars to the parents for contributions to the clinic. The secretary was instructed to thank Mr Young for the shrubs he had sent to the school. Arrangements were made to call a meeting of those interested in holding a spring flower show. Heathcote Notes. The fortnightly social in aid of funds for the spring flower show was held in St Mary’s Schoolroom, Heathcote, on Tuesday evening, when those in charge of the handkerchief stall were responsible for the arrangements. There was a good attendance and an enjoyable time was spent dancing to music supplied by Mr Russell Beaumont. A lucky spot waltz was won by Mrs Fish and Mr Gibson, and a lucky number dance by Mr W. and Miss M. Wakelin. Mr A. Hedgeman was M.C., and Miss M. Halliday played extras. During the evening the Rev F. A. Tooley reported that the recent children’s fancy dress party had resulted in a net profit of £B, which had been forwarded to the St Martin’s House of Help. The Heathcote School basketball team journeyed to Opawa on Friday afternoon and played a competition match with the Sydenham B team. The game resulted in a draw, 5 all. Ella Benson and Jean Perkins scored for Heathcote and Miss Hodgson was referee. With the advent of the warmer weather gardeners in the Heathcote district are preparing for next season’s' tomato crop. Some of the heated houses are already planted, but the majority of growers are at present engaged in the “pricking out” of the seedlings. Approximately sixty children comprising Standard 111, IV, V and VI of the local school visited the Winter Show on Tuesday afternoon. Lambs have made their appearance on the Port Hills, and a number are to be seen in the Heathcote district. Concert at Shirley. An excellent concert was given in the Shirley Methodist Schoolroom last Saturday evening by the Senior Young Women’s and Young Men’s Bible Classes. The programme consisted of choruses, vocal and elocutionary items and two short plays. The special lighting effects provided by Mr W. D. Marks were much appreciated and added greatly to the enjoyment of the various items. St. Albans Baptist Church. Last Monday night the officers of the St. Albans Baptist Church elected a committee to confer with similar committees from other churches, and to co-operate with the New Zealand Alliance in the no-license crusade this year. The secretary was instructed to inform the head master that the order for the boys’ football jerseys had been placed but the firm had replied that it was unable to supply them owing to the colours being unprocurable. Mr Wood was elected a member to fill a vacancy on the committee, and Mr Manson to fill the vacant position of secretary and treasurer. Belfast Request. The request of a number of residents of Belfast was received at last night’s meeting of the Waimairi County Council, asking that a footpath be formed on the east side of North Road, from Factory Road to the Belfast Hotel. It was stated that a number of children used the path on the way to school. Mr Cleland (member for the riding) said that there was no money available. Ten to fifteen chains of drain would need to be piped. At present the path was used by cyclists. Mr Spencer (member for Spencerville and chairman of the Belfast School Committee) said that the work could be done under the No. 5 Scheme, and would cost little. The foreman (Mr Voice) said that there was not sufficient traffic to keep the grass down. If the path were formed there would be the expense of screenings and gas oxide, and, further, the school was on the other side of the road. On a show of hands the request was refused. »'» •*« Upper Ric carton Affairs. A letter was received from the Upper Riccarton Burgesses’ Association at last night’s meeting of the Waimairi County Council asking that a traffic inspector be stationed at the corner of Hansen's and Riccarton Roads on race days. Waimairi, Harewood, St. Joseph’s, Belfast and Papanui competed. The school term ends on August 21. The secretary was instructed to write to the W.C.T.U., stating that, according to the Canterbury E-’.-cation Board’s ruling, religious instruction could not be allowed in school hours. The Northcote Cricket Club was granted permission to use the school grounds, and also to lay down a concrete pitch, and thirty shillings donated toward the cost. Messrs Sandford, Wray and Craighead were appointed delegates to meet representatives of the club and draw up suitable rules., Repairs to the stands in the cycle shed were left in the hands of Mr Henderson.
