REDUCTION OPPOSED
Salaries of Australian Judges Discussed. CONSTITUTIONAL QUESTION United Press Assn. —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright. SYDNEY, August 12. The Prime Minister, Mr J. H. Scullin, recently wrote to the judges of the High Court of Australia; inviting them to volunteer to accept a twenty-five per cent reduction in their salaries. The Chief Justice, Sir Frank Gavan Duffy, and Justices Starke and Evatt declined, but expressed their willingness to forgo their £4 4s a day travelling allowance when away from their own States. The other three judges agreed to the salary reduction.
The objectors gave as their reason that they were not prepared to weaken that section of the Constitution which provided that nothing must be done to diminish judges’ salaries during their continuance of office.
