Work for Unemployed at the Domain. * FENCING THE NEW DRIVE. (Special to the •• Star.”) ASHBURTON. August 12. The fencing of the new drive into the domain from the corner of Kast Street and Walnut Avenue was completed yesterday and all that now remains to be done is the painting of the larrah posts. The fence consists of three barbed and three plain wires, with iron standards between the posts. Most of the work has been carried out by unemployed labour. Borough School Committee. At the last meeting of the Borough School Committee it was decided 'to apply for a probationer to replace Miss J. C. Woods, whose resignation tock effect on July 31. At to-night’s meeting, Mr J. Watson presiding, a reply was received from the Education Board expressing regret that it could not accede to the request. The Board explained that while probationers in training might be useful in the school organisation, they were only supernumerary to the ordinary staff and a school that had any could thereiore consider itself fortunate. There were a number of schools as large as Ashburton that did not have any at all this year. The main reason for noncompliance with the request was that probationers could not be appointed after the end of February and the only way in which relief could be granted would be to transfer one from another school, a step that would be objected to by those most concerned. Votes of thanks were accorded Messrs G. and C. Clark for their donation of shrubs in connection with Arbor Day, and to Mr G. Clark for supervising the planting. Messrs T. Doherty and T. G. A. Harle were appointed a Visiting Committee for the ensuing month. St Stephen’s Social Club.
Mr A. Meredith presided over a meeting of the St Stephen’s Literary and Social Club when it was decided to write thanking the Girls’ Friendly Society for the concert they had presented. A debate between the club and St Andrew’s Bible Class was held, the subject being “ That the Present Age is showing Alarming Signs of Deterioration.” St Andrew’s won by 12 points affer an interesting discussion, the speakers being Messrs L. Houston, Wills and R. Shaw-. Those for St Stephen's were Messrs M. Lees, W. Shierlaw and R Childs. Mr R. H. Biggar was judge. Supper was provided by the Girls' Friendly Society, and the rest of the evening was spent in games. Service to be Broadcast. A special children’s service at the Baring Square Methodist Church on Sunday evening will be broadcast through station 3YA, and the Ashburton Silver Band will give a concert over the air from His Majesty’s Theatre at the conclusion of the church service. This will be the second time that a church service has been broadcast from Ashburton. School Term Holidays.
