SOCIAL GATHERINGS.
SURPRISE PARTY. A surprise party visited the home of Miss Pratt, Gloucester Street, on Monday evening in honour of the approaching marriage of her niece, Miss Katherine Thornton. The party took the form of a kitchen evening and the guest of honour received many useful gifts. Among those present were: Misses Pratt; G. Dale, N. Stewart, P. Narbey, J. Thomas, O. Hawkins, D. Higgins, M. Knight, Z. Heard and E. Ewing. Dance at Woolston. The St John’s Girls’ Club, Woolston, held a successful dance in aid of the club’s funds, in the Parish Hall on Monday evening. Novelty dances resulted: Lucky spot onestep, Miss P. Woodham and Mr C. Lingard; Monte Carlo waltz, Miss L. Robinson and Mr J. Genet. M. D. Mitchell’s orchestra supplied the dance music, Mr R. H. Beaumont played extras and Mr J. R. Douglass was M.C. Social Evening. An enjoyable social and dance was held recently in the Lynton Downs Schoolroom, where there was a large attendance from the surrounding districts. Mr P. S. Humm was M.C. and music for the dancing was supplied by Misses M. and E. Wareham. After supper Mrs Weavers took the opportunity on behalf of the Lynton Downs residents, to make a suitable presentation to Miss Rosa* Boyd, on the occasion of her approaching marriage.-. % Kitchen Evening. A kitchen evening in honour of Miss M. Currie, of the Kaikoura School teaching staff, was given by her friends in the Masonic Hall on Tuesday evening. ’Miss Currie opened the numerous parcels which disclosed a number of useful articles. Dancing was enjoyed to music supplied by Mrs W. Sabi?ton (piano), Mr E. Munson, Messrs Stubbs (cornet), Wallace (mandoline) and Jameson (banjo). Miss Monica Mackle played extras and Mr L. Shannon was M.C. Selwyn Kindergarten Social. A successful social afternoon was held on Tuesday for the mothers of pupils attending the Selwyn Kindergarten. There were competitions, games and exhibitions of the children’s work. Miss Hull spoke of the handwork done by the children, and pointed out what could be made and accomplished by them from waste materials. Afternoon tea was served.
