“SERIOUS POSITION.”
Finances of Presbyterian Orphanages.
The need for increased support of the Presbyterian orphanages was stressed at a meeting of the Christchurch Presbytery this morning, when a report on the matter was adopted.
“We wish to stress the seriousness of the financial position,” stated the report on Presbyterian Social Service Association matters. It was stated that it had been impossible to capitalise any part of the legacies received by the association. Last year the expenditure exceeded the income by £ISOO.
The reporting committee was of the opinion that the situation could be met by increased publicity and further attention to organisation. Proposals made included the suggestion that the Presbytery should appoint one Sunday in the year as “ Orphanage Sunday,” and that each congregation should mike a collection for the orphanages on at least one day during the year. The congregations should be urged to make contributions of produce in connection with the thanksgiving celebrations. It was also suggested that “ Egg Sunday ” be revived and that congregations take turns in supplying Christmas dinner;? for the orphanages. An annual concert to raise funds should also be held A recommendation was made that the Ashburton and Westland Presbyteries should be advised of the seriousness of the financial situation and invited to co-operate in securing increased support. The report was adopted, and it was decided to send a copy to each congregation.
