TRAMP’S LONG VOYAGE.
Norwegian Ship to Call x at Lyttelton. (Special to the “ Star.”) WELLINGTON. August 12. After a long and typically tramp voyage, the Norwegian motor ship Temeraire arrived at Wellington in the stream on Sunday night from Sydney, and berthed on Monday. There was a time when tramp voyages were fairly frequent, but they, are now becoming fewer and fewer, as the tramp ships are being replaced by fast modern cargo liners. Now that shipping is being affected by the world-wide depression in trade, some ships have been forced to leave their regular runs and “ tramp ” for cargoes, and the Temeraire is one of these. Like other Norwegian ships she travels to Australia, either through the Suez Canal or via South Africa, but this time she extended her voyage to New Zealand. She is flying the Norwegian mail ensign, which is a three-tailed flag with the word “ post ” on it, and a crown. This is the first time that the flag has been seen in Wellington. Varied Cargo. The Temeraire brought a varied cargo. She commenced her voyage from Norway on May 25, and loaded at Hamburg, Rotterdam, Antwerp and Lisbon before setting off for Cape Town. She brought little of her European cargo to New Zealand, and what she did bring was mainly glass. Her South African cargo for New Zealand consisted mainly of maize, and there was also some dried fruit, oil, and a little wine, there being 1400 tons altogether. The Swedish motor ship Innaren brought a somewhat similar cargo, including dried and canned fruit and wine, earlier in the year. From
Cape Town the Temeraire went to Fremantle. Bunbury, Melbourne and Sydney. Her cargo from Australia comprised West Australian hardwoods; there are 2100 loads of timber for New Zealand on board, a load being fifty cubic feet. There are 600 loads to be discharged at Wellington. The Temeraire which is of 6465 tons gross register, was built in December, 1927. Captain I. Christensen is in command. The ship will leave on Thursd for Lyttelton, Napier and Auckland to complete discharge This is her first voyage to New Zealand.
