KAIAPOI COUNCIL.

Report on Sewerage Scheme Delayed. The Kaiapol Borough Council met last night. Present: The Mayor (Rev W. H. A. Vickery), Councillors A. E. Brown, C. M. Williams, M. Ramsay, F. Thorne, J. W. Barnard, H. Rinaldi, J. D. Williams and R. J. Dunn. The chairman, St John Ambulance Association, Christchurch, wrote asking for a grant from the council towards maintaining the association's free ambulance service in Christchurch and surrounding districts. A grant of £5 5s was made.

The Board’s representative. District Highways Council, Christchurch, advised that an inspection had been made of the shouldering on the main highway through the borough, when it was found that the shoulders were in good condition except for a small piece at the post office intersection, which would be remedied by the contractor before the maintenance period expired. The Auditor-General, Wellington, wrote advising that the Audit Office would consent to the depreciation charges for 1930-31 being funded in two equal amounts, the first instalment to be paid to the Commissioners on their appointment and the second to be paid out of the revenue for the current year.

Mr A. H. Gourlay wrote asking if the council would favourably consider a reduction in the electric light charges in connection with his fish shop. His last account had amounted to over £l3. The letter was referred to the Lighting Committee.

The secretary, Kaiapoi branch of the Plunket Society, forwarded a copy of the annual balance-sheet and asked if the council could see its way to grant the usual annual donation of £5 for 1931-32. The Mayor stated that provision for a grant of £5 had been made in the estimates.

The Kaiapoi R.S.A. was granted permission to hold a street fair this year for the annual children’s Christmas fair. The town clerk, Riccarton, wrote asking if the council would co-operate by forwarding requests to the Health Department, Audit Department and Fire Board for a reduction in costs to enable in turn a reduction in general rates, with the idea of passing the benefits to be derived from the 10 per cent reduction in salaries and wages on to those ratepayers who had suffered through its imposition. The letter was received. Mr W. H. Stevens, drainage engineer, Rangiora, intimated that he would be unable to report on a sewerage scheme for the borough before November. Mr W. J.
