RUGBY DATES CLASH.

Three Important Matches in one Day. “ The New Zealand Union should, before fixing such matches as the North v. South Island, see that such a fixture toes not clash with provincial games,” stated Mr E. V. Phillips at the meeting of the Management Committee of the Canterbury Rugby Union last evening, when the clashing of dates for the three fixtures—the North v. South Island, the Canterbury v. Wanganui and the Payne Trophy matches—was discussed. The chairman (Mr A. E. M'Phail): Unfortunately Canterbury have six men In the South Island team. After our strenuous efforts to get the Payne Tirc/phy match played on a Saturday we are in a peculiar position. We knew of the North v. South Island game. Mr Phillips: Then it was remissness on the part of our delegates to the meeting of the New Zealand Union. The chairman: We did not know then that we would have six players in the South Island team. Mr A. Duggan: The North v. South Island game should be played on a Wednesday. The chairman replied that that match was Icoked upon as a good source of revenue, and Saturday was the best day for a gate. The discussion was started by Mr P. Harvey, one of the Canterbury selectors, asking whether the Union would sanction the sending of two full-backs to the North Island, if necessary. Howatson would be wanted by Merivale for the Payne Trophy match at Christchurch next Saturday, but it might be considered necessary to send him north the following Monday night for the matches against Hawke’s Bay and Wellington. A motiojj that the Merivale team be allowed to retain Howatson for the Payne Trophy match was carried and it was decided to give the selectors a free hand in the matter. The question of D. G. Simpson’s eligibility to play in the Ranfurly Shield match against Wellington next Saturday week was discussed. It was stated that Simpson had played for Bulier In a Seddon Shield match, which Buller won. By next Saturday week Simpson would have been In Christchurch for nearly three weeks.
