BOXING.

ST ANDREW’S COLLEGE BOYS DECIDE TITLES. The annual boxing championships in connection with St AndrfcVr’s College were decided on Saturday evening. The preliminary bouts had been held beforehand, Leaving only the and finals to be fought out. The programme included twenty bouts and at no time was interest allowed to lag. The boys showed that they possessed a good knowledge of the finer points, While in the majority of the bouts, the contestants showed a decided willingness to indulge in rapid "exchanges. Hurricane hitting in at at least two of the bouts caused much excitement and in few instances was the result other than ir» doubt until the end. Not once during the evening was the referee's count heard. There was a fair attendance It* the college gymnaisum where the Championships were held. The referee (t>r W*. H. Simpson) npedking at the conclusion of the programme, said that the standard of boxing that evening was os good as ever it had been. Sportsmanship was to be expected in secondary schools, and time and again it had been in evidence during the bouts. The winners of the various classes were as follows:—Under Set, Du It. Ogilvlv; under 6«t 101 b, N. Williamson; under 7st 101 b, E. Jslherwood; under Bst Irtlb, I. 15. M'Xair; under Ost IOIb, C. Foote; under 3 Ost 10lb, K. S. Cree: heavy-weight and School championship. K. S. Cree, who gave a finished performance in each of three bouts he was engaged in. The officials were: Refetee, Pr w. H. Simpson; judges. Major 11. F. W. Ashworth and Dir W. E. R. Cordery; timekeeper, Mr C'. H. Taylor; announcer. Captain F. Pond; medical officer, Pr L. A. Bennett. Results:UNDER 68T. Semi-final. U. B. Ogilvie (6st) defeated K. Crankpliaw (4st 101 b). Orfthkshaw, despite his handicap In weight and reach, boxed gamely, but Ogilvie exercised his advantages and w6n easily. M. Kennedy (Ost) defeated Ben Bull (Sst). Kennedy displayed a punishing left and beat a tattoo op Bill's face, drawing blood in the first round. Bull was game, but Kennedy forced the pace in the last round and won without extending himself. Final. Ogilvie defeated Kennedy. This bout wan productive of a high standard for such young lads. Kennedy gave a good account of himself in the first round, but Ogilvie was a shade the better In the remaining two, preserving a good defence. They fought themselves almost to a standstill. UNDER 6 ST 1088. Seml-flnal. N. Crompton (6st 101b> defeated M. Wren (6st 91b). A quiet bout In which both boys exchanged Mows at long range. Crompton showed an Inclination for close work and was the more aggressive, winning the bout by a small margin. N. Williamson <6st 91b) defeated RRudkin (Sst 3 01b). This bfiut was characterised by a willingness to exchange punches. Rudkin used a solid left, while Williamson was quick to retaliate with both hands and vt’as the quicker on his fiet_ Final. Williamson defeated Crompton. The first round was quiet, Williamson penetrating his opponent’s guard once or twice. The second round saw a livening up, both landing face and body punches, while the third saw each man land several hard blows, mainly not properly timed. UNDER 78T 1088. Semi-final. Jj. Hudson (7st 71b) defeated N. Q. Hillary (7st 101 b). Both boys were quick and exchanged & series of rapid blows at close range. Hillary had the advantage of reach and employed a useful left. Hudson stood up well to hfs attacks and carried the fight t 6 his opponent. scoring frequently. JO. Isherwood <7St 91b) defeated P. Foote (7st 71b). The first round contained little of interest, both lads sparring for an opening. Isherwood used a troublesome left, while Foote relied on a solid right. The second round saw Isherwood score several blows to the face and head, Foote landing hard rights to the body. Isherwood forced the issue in this round and won a close Final. ISherwtod defeated Hudson. Isherwood worried his opponent with a useful right hook, but Hudson, usihg both gloves and forcing th 6 fight, lest the decision by a close margin. UNDER BST 10LB. Semi-final. D. Jones (Sst 31b) defeated W. Sar- I gent (Bst 101 b). Both boys “mixed it” freely and a prolonged exchange of hurricane hitting prevailed throughout the I

The second round started in ’ similarly, but the pace was too fast. < Jones led by a small margin toward the i finish when Sargent showed signs of ) distress. Final. i T. B. M’Xair (Sst 10lb) defeated Jones. ’ I M'Xair. who had a bye, entered the ring for the first time and forced the fight, j penetrating Jones’s guard repeatedly. Jones took heavy punishment, the , referee intervening towards the end ot j the first round. UNDER SST 10J,B. Semi-final. R, Maxwell (Sst 91b) defeated B. C. I Clarke <9*t 71b). ; This was one of tfce most interesting bouts of the evening, marked by a rapid battery of blows. The pace wta fast until the end of the second round ’ when the boys’ energy was expended. Clark took the offensive and connected 1 once with an uppercut, but Maxwell closed in and Clarke gave way under a rain of sharp body punches. Maxwell established a slight lead which lm held to the end. .... 1 C. Foote (9st 301b> defeated J. Whittaker (9st). Whittaker was the more aggressive but his blow-s were often wild and he suffered at the expense of Foote’s right 1 glove which contained a solid blow. Foote won a quiet bout. Final. Foote defeated Maxwell. Foote’s left proved the deciding factor in bis defeat of Maxwell. The opening round was quiet, but., in the next, Foote staggered him with a brace to the chin, In tl 'e onsuifig exchanges, he gradually increased bis lead and won comfortably. UNDER 10ST 10DB. i Semi-finals. K. S. Cree (l6st 21b) defeated R. Enaor (lOst). Cree proved liimself the most finished boxed of the evening, lie had a longer reach and was exceptionally quick to Jump in and land lightning punches with both gloves, and out again before Knsor could retaliate. Kneor trivd to keep tho fight at close quarters where he used both hands to advantage. J. U. Jones (lOst 91b) defeated C. B. M'lntosh (lOst 31b). Both lads were , willing to exchange rapid blows, especially in the second round. They were often ill-timed and an interesting bout was won by Jones. Final. The final between Cree and Jones was not productive of the fast hitting : which had characterised the earlier i bouts. Each boxed cautiously and it was early seen that Cree was an artist of no mean ability. Nevertheless his opponent was not one he could take lightly. Th\> second bout was more willing, with honours to Cree. He showed surprising quickness in launching his attacks and surprising agility in avoiding ’ Jones's two-hirtded attention. Cree's right was very effective. HEAVY-WEIGHT. K. S. Cree (lOst 21b) met F. R. Morrow (list 21b) in the heavy-weight and College championship. Despite the fact thata thefe was a stone difference in weights. Cree more than held his own if* the first round, his third appearance during the evening, while Morrow was making his debut. Cree* crisp punches disconcerted Morroty. who was working hard, but not connecting properly. The second round saw Crfe improve his position, finding Morrow's face more than onc e - Morrow landed several body punches. Cfee exercised his superior ringcraf t in the final round. Morrow forced the fight in a last, dvsperate effort, but Cree. avoiding his heavy rights, punished him severely in the closing stages.
