PROTECTION FOR GROWERS WANTED.

LARGE IMPORTATIONS OF AUSTRALIAN BARLEY. (Special to the “Star.”) WELLINGTON, August 5. Two aspects of the question of barley production were presented to the House yesterday by Mr E. F. Healy (Wairait) in questions to Ministers. He asked the Prime Minister if it is the Government’s intention to impose a dumping duty on Australian barley imported for feed, pointing out that it had been reported that Australian barley was being brought to Auckland in large quantities which had been sold at Is 6d per bushel free on board, thus leaving Canterbury, Otago and Marlborough growers with large stocks which are unsaleable. To the Minister of Agriculture Mr Healy put the suggestion that he should immediately investigate • the large difference in the price of barley sold in Marlborough and retailed to IV aikato dairy farmers and pig and poultry raisers. The member stated that a Waikato dairy farmer on a recent visit to Marlborough found that he could purchase good feed barley at per bushel and the freight to Port Waikato or Taupiri was lOd. yet the lowest quotation he could get in his own district was 4s, plus lOd freight.
