MORE OPPOSITION TO REDUCED DUTIES
ASHBURTON SETTLERS VITALLY INTERESTED. (Special to the “ Star/’) ASHBURTON, August 4. The question of wheat duties and what assistance could be given to bodies interested in the county were discussed at a largely attended meeting held in the Borough Council Chambers to-night. The Mayor (Mr W. H. Woods) presided. Also present were : Mr D. Jones, M.P., and Sir William j Nosworthy. Mr R. Collins moved the following re-1 solution: *‘ That this meeting of rate-1 payers and residents of the Ashburton j borough emphatically protest against the revision of the sliding scale of wheat and flour duties as suggested in the Budget. We are strongly of opinion that the scale should be amended to a basis guaranteeing the grower 4s 9d per bushel net on trucks at country stations, sacks extra, for Tuscan, MarchApril delivery ” The motion was seconded by Mr R. Dunlop and carried unanimously. Thanks were accorded Sir William Nosworthy and Mr D. Jones, M.P., also the Mayor, who was instrumental in calling the public meeting.
