MARRIED WOMEN IN TEACHING PROFESSION. As a result of the decision of Mr Justice Herdman in a test case heard in Auckland, that education boards have no power to dismiss married women teachers, it is now unlikely that the Canterbury Education Board will take any further action in the matter. Mr C. R. Kirk, secretary of the Canterbury Board, said to-day' that there were 74 married women, including 15 widows, at present employed as teachers in Canterbury and Westland. Recently the board had written asking them to give reasons why they considered they should still be in the teaching service. AH except two had replied setting out the reasons why they thought they' should be allowed to retain their positions. Only one had resigned since action was taken by the board. The replies had been before the last meeting of the board, and it was then decided not to take any further action until the test case was decided. The effect of the decision of Mr Justice Herdman was that if the board dismissed any teacher on the grounds that she was a married woman she would be able to appeal successfully to the Teacher’s Court of Appeal. In these circumstances it was hardly likely that the board would do anything further in the matter, although it would come up for consideration at the next meeting. ACTION CONTEMPLATED. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND. August 5 In consequence of Mr Justice Ilerdman’s decision delivered yesterday, the Auckland Education Board decided today to withraw the notices of dismissal previously' sent to about fifty' married women teachers. Further action is contemplated. The Board has decided to ask the Minister of Education whether the Court’s judgment represented his desire when he brought the amending legislation before Parliament.
