RACING NOTES FROM AUCKLAND

Getting Ready For Easter.

(Special to the “ Star.”) AUCKLAND, March 31. Bronze Eagle, who won a double in brilliant stj’le at Wellington, has been galloping well at Takanini since his return and he is sure to have a large following in the Champagne Stakes on Saturday. lie has an extra furlong to go, but by the manner in which he shaped at Trentham this should not trouble him in the least. The Brazen colt, who has always displayed speed ever since he was put into work, is particularly well developed, and he gives every indication of being a highclass three-year-old. R. Watson, who has recently been granted a license, left for Thames yesterday to school Billikins and other horses belonging to Mr A. Winder. Watson, who is a brother of L. Watson, rode in India. Reports from ITawera state * that Silver-mine is training on splendidly for his Easter Handicap engagement at Ellerslie on Saturday. He was sent over a mile last Saturday with Chief Link and ran the distance in lmin 43sec, which is considered a good effort and proves that he has gone on the right way since his success in the Thompson Handicap. Last season Silvermine finished third in the Easter Handicap at Ellerslie and recent form shows that he is better than he was at this time last year. J. Fryer arrived on Sunday to supervise his team, which comprises Bright Glow, Airtight and Peter Jackson. Bright Glow has not been seriously tested since she arrived here, but is reported to have been galloping well in the south prior to her arrival here. Fryer will have two horses engaged at the Feilding meeting—Paitonu and Goblin Market. Green Linnet may also be taken to the same meeting. Afterwards Paitonu and Green Linnet may be brought north for the Avondale autumn meeting, which opens on April According to reports from Hawera, Chief Link has been going along well in his work and the son of Chief Ruler should soon get on the winning list again. During the season he accounted for the Electric Handicap, five furlongs, at Stratford, the Electric Handicap, five furlongs, at Hawera, and the Mimi High-Weight Handicap, seven furlongs, at the Taranaki autumn meeting. His dam, Silver Link, was a very speedy mare up to a mile, and her victories included the Easter

Handicap at Ellerslie. Chief Link is engaged on the second day at Auckland and also at Avondale. 11. Dulieu, who has ridden most successfully over hurdles this season, will not be at the Auckland meeting, having been engaged to ride Royal Acre at Feilding. Since winning the Champion Hack Cup at Te Aroha, Manawhenua has been shaping well in his work and he will be in first-rate order for his Eden Handicap engagement on Saturday. So far Manawhenua has shown good form at the country meetings, but he has not proved capable of winning at Ellerslie. However, he is a better horse now than when he raced at the Auckland summer meeting, and although he may encounter strong opposition from the top-weights he should make a good showing. Although Wako King has yet to win a steeplechase event, he- ran second to Master Lu in the Te Awamutu Steeplechase last June, and occupied a similar position to St Warrigal in the Waikato Hunt Cup Steeplechase at the Waikato Hunt meeting at Cambridge on Labour Day. Wako King was schooled over the big countrv dt Ellerslie on Saturday morning and gave a first-class disP Ja 3 r of jumping. He is now looking much better than he has done for some time past and with only 9.0 to carry in the Mangere Steeplechase on Saturday he should race prominentlv. Since winning the Auckland Cup last Boxing Day Motere has failed to get into a place in his three starts. However, he has been going along well in his work at Te Awamutu and is expected to make a good showing during his Auckland and Avondale engagements.. Motere’s only engagement at Ellerslie is the Autumn Handicap, one mile and a half, on Monday, and the distance in this event will be in his favour, for although he has never proved himself a particularly brilliant galloper he is certainly a genuine stayer. Pegawav continues to please by his work at Te Awamutu, and he promises to strip a very fit horse for the Easter Handicap at Ellerslie, an event he won last year with lib less than he is called upon to carry on Saturday. His last outing was at Te Aroha, where he ran third in the Herries Memorial Cup, one mile and three furlongs, carrying 9.5, while on the second day he won the President’s Handicap, one mile and a ' quarter, with 9.7.
