LEGAL COSTS MAY BE REDUCED SOON.
FIRMS IN CHRISTCHURCH ADVISED BY SOCIETY. The Canterbury Law Society yesterday advised its members of a resolution of the New Zealand Society recommending a reduction of all solicitor and client costs by 10 per cent as from March 31. It is suggested that the reduction should be shown as a special discount, and should appear at the foot of the bill. The Council of the Canterbury Society is also recommending that members should, where necessary, reduce the salaries of their staffs by 10 per cent. It appears likely that most of the legal firms in Christchurch will follow these recommendations. Business during recent months has been, decidedly quiet, and some firms have already had to make reductions in staff.
The same circular requested practitioners having titles in the Hawke’s Bay district to forward them to the Registrar-General, Wellington. Because of the destruction of the Land Registry Office at Napier it has become necessary to prepare a completely new register of title.
