“AERIAL?)
NEWS AND NOTES. Where Are They? “Junius” writes: “I am the possessor of a nine-valve all-electric receiver and thought I would write and let you know the results I am getting out here (Burwood). Following your advice I put up a one-pole aerial and installed a Pearce (is that the name?) earth system—a dozen copper pipes placed in a halfcircle, each about 20 inches apart, with a soldered wire running in to a common soldered centre where the earth lead enters the house. Previously I had owned a very good battery set, but I had a lot of trouble in getting a loudspeaker that I liked. One day I heard an A.C. set in town and the tone was so fine I decided I must have one. Now I've got it I’m satisfied that there’s nothing (so far as I am concerned) can come up to the modern all-electric set with speaker installed for beauty of tone. Which, to me, is the paramount consideration in a wireless set. After all, one wants to be pleased, and even if you get all the world, but in a squawky tone, what’s the good of it? There may be some interest in hearing a DX station on a tinny speaker, but I am sure there’s nothing pleasant to the ear about it. Well, I started to tell you about my results. I was much impressed with the DX qualities of this new machine. Not only have I heard all the New Zealand A and B stations, but also every Australian station I've ever seen listed. Now and then I’ve heard, I think, every Jap., while, up to a fortnight ago, my bag of Americans very nearly equalled that list you published in the ‘Star’ a week or so back, which, by the way, I found very useful. But, during the past week or ten days a curious ‘silence’ has descended on Amethey had ‘gone off the air’ from 10 p.m. to midnight (their time), as I have not been able to hear a word between 6 and S o’clock of an evening. They haven’t actually gone off the air, of course —T can hear their carriers sometimes—but there’s no doubt about their being almost inaudible just now. Others, I find, are experiencing the same conditions just now. They won’t last long, that 1 know, as we had the same experience for a few weeks this time last year.” Amateur Transmitters.
