Tramway Management.

To the Dear Sir, —The attitude the new Tramway Board have already taken toward* their staff in reply to the “Labour Party’s fighting fund ” subscribed and organised by the staff in question, is remarkable for it* vindictiveness, both by its unnecessary dismissals of the twelve men and its application to work the tramways outside the Arbitration Court’s jurisdiction. How many business men on the board are game to run their own firms without a recognised award ? With regard to the dismissals following rejection of the rationing scheme, I maintain that there is no reason whatever why these unfortunate men should be put out of employment when the board are already short-handed. On many trips, the conductor in charge is compelled to take charge of the trailers owing to the assistant conductors being required elsewhere. This is a very dangerous practice and should be stopped. Why send a tram from town to do the first car from Brighton when a resident crew and tram are stationed at Brighton for that purpose? Why be burdened with a horde of inspectors if the trams are not paying? Why does the board not meet the men and ask for co-operation instead of this everlasting friction and pin-prick-ing? Perhaps Mr Trolove could come down to earth for a bit and help.—l am, etc., F. W. JESSETT. New Brighton.
