OUTBOARD MOTORS RACE AT AKAROA.
(Special to the “ Star. 1 ”) AKAROA, January 3. A strong nor’-west wind in Akaroa harbour to-day caused trouble among many small boats anchored near the jetties. One outboard was swamped in the early morning. The sea was .so rough that the outboard motor regatta had to be postponed till the afternoon, when the races could be held only over a short course under shelter of the hills. Seven outboards competed in a series of three heats of a jnile and a half. Results;— First heat —Sea Horse (R. M. Watson), handicap 2min 40sec, 1; Miss A. (W. A. Hopkins), 2min 52sec, 2; C. Bird (T. M’Caughan), lmin 36sec, 3. Pelorus Jack finished first, but was disqualified. Second heat—Play Boy (J. Simpson) 1, Country Boy (T. Reston) 2, Sea 3. The other four boats, though gaining places, were disqualified for exceeding their handicaps. Third heat.—C. Bird, 4.15, 1; Country Boy, 3.55, 2; Pelorus Jack, 5.25, 3. Second series.—First heat: Miss A, 3.9, 1; Seahorse, 2.46, 2; Playboy, 3.7, 3.
