AMATEUR SPORTS HELD AT METHVEN.
GOOD PERFORMANCES IN SPITE OF WIND. (Special to the “Star.”) • METHVEN - , January 3. The revival of amateurism in the Methven district was marked to-day by the annual gathering of the Methven Caledonian Society, which was held at the Show Grounds in boisterous nor’west weather conditions. For some years the society sponsored the professional sport, but this season turned its attention wholly to amateurism. Good fields faced the starter in many of the events, and the racing was full of interest. Although the wind was a serious handicap against fast times, some good performances were registered. J. S. Wilson, last year’s secondary schools champion, was in good form, winning the maiden 100 yards handicap and 75 yards open handicap. Results:— 880yds open handicap—J. ITay (New Brighton), 25yds, 1; C. Davenport (Canterbury), 90yds, 2; L. W. Clark (Sydenham), 90vds, 3. Making a great run in the second lap, Hay opened up a big lead and won comfortably. Davenport, who followed Clark practically the whole of the journey, made a late run to get second place by two feet. Time—lmin 58 l-ssec. 100yds maiden handicap—J. S. Wilson 1, K. C. M'Vinney 2; R. M. Tolputt 3. Won easily. Time—llsec. 75yds open handicap—First heat: J. S. Wilson (6svds) 1, A. Rowe (6yds) 2, T. G. Kennedy (sj>-ds) 3. m Time—-7 3-ssec. Second heat: G. Harrison (6vds) 1, K. C. M’Vinney (6£yds) 2, J. F. Bamford (2.yds) 3. Time—Ssec. Final. Wilson (Methven) 1 Rowe (Ashburton) 2 Harrison (Technical) 3 Wilson ran in convincing style, finishing strongly, to win by two feet. Harrison was a foot away. Bamford was fourth. Time—Ssec.
