SALAMAN’S RELEASE SOUGHT BY PATIENTS

MANY ATTEND MEETING AT NEW PLYMOUTH. Per Press Association. NEW PLYMOUTH, November 30. About one hundred persons crowded round the doors and forty more were counted as they left the hall on Saturday night after passing unanimously resolutions asking for the immediate release from prison of Abraham Wally Mahomed Salaman, the Indian herbalist, who was recently found guilty of manslaughter of a boy who was taken to him for treatment for diabetes and who was sentenced to twelve months’ imprisonment. The meeting was intensely enthusiastic, the remarks of the speakers being freely punctuated with applause. The following resolutions were directed to be telegraphed to the Acting-Prime Minister, to Mr Coates and to Mr 11. E. Holland:— “ That Salaman should be released from gaol at once. With all due respect to the Chief Justice, Salaman is, in the opinion of this meeting, no charlatan. The meeting respectfully asks that the Minister of Justice should immediately release Salaman, whose imprisonment is a great handicap and hardship to hundreds of sufferers who were being treated by him and are now sadly in need of his help.”

“ That the necessary action be taken by means of petitioning the authorities and otherwise in order to bring about the release of Salaman with as little delay as possible.” “ That a committee of five be appointed to draft a petition and otherwise carry into effect the desire of this meeting.”

“ That, having been informed that the police have intimated their intention of proceeding with certain miner charges against Salaman in the Magistrate’s Court, this meeting respectfully suggests that the Minister of Justice ® ® S 51SEI ® 13 ® !g S ® II! @ EEI ® EE! S I*l ig H

should give the necessary instructions that these charges be not proceeded with in view of Salaman’s conviction on the major charge.” Petition lists praying for Salaman’s immediate release were distributed and were largely signed.
