TAKAPUNA RACES. Per Press Association AUCKLAND, December 1. There was showery weather and a fair attendance for the second day at Takapuna, where the track was a trifle sticky. Results:— VAUXHALL HANDICAP, Of 200 sovs; 7 furlongs. 1— Karangapai, 8.11 1 12—Merry Lu, 7.9 2 B—Valmarie, 7.10 3 Scratched—Red Lion, Gay Idea, Clopton, Neil, Thunderstorm. Won by three-quarters of a length, half a length between second and third. Time—lmin 29 4-osec. KAWAU HIGH WEIGHT HANDICAP, Of 225 sovs. Eleven furlongs, and forty yards. 4 —Luminary, 10.2 1 B—Patutahi, 9.0 -2 2 Stonehenge, 9.0 3 Scratched: Cruachan, Brampton, Aiwa j*s, Glena Bay, Respirator. Won by a length and a half, a neck between second and third. Time—2min 26 3-5 sec. STANLEY HANDICAP. NOTES ON THE RACING. (Special to the “Star.”) AUCKLAND, December 1. In the Vauxhall Handicap backers had the pleasure of seeing the favourite do his part well, and lead the opposition past the judge. There were twenty starters, and Karangapai was sorted out as the best, the three-year-old son of Peach Brandy being favourite, carrying £549. Operatic was second in demand, with £336. Camp Princess had £251 invested on her chance, while Merry Lu, who eventually finished second, carried only £4O. At the jump off, Merry Lu at once went to the lead and piloted the field along the back, where Valmarie was second, and then came Miss Albyn, Good Idea, Operatic, Great Emblem, Top Star, Land Measure, Leasehold, and Karangapai. Merry Lu was clear as the field raced across the top, Valmarie still being second, with Good Idea, Operatic, Miss Albyn, Camp Princess, Land Measure and Karangapai following. Karangapai then put in a good run, and was third into the straight, where Merry Lu had three lengths’ lead over Valmarie. Good Idea was up fourth, with Land Measure and Royal Survey most prominent of the others. In the straight the favourite dashed up, and, settling the pair in front of him, went on to win by three-quarters of a length from Merry Lu, with Valmarie half a length away, third. Then came Good Idea. King Swift, Land Measure, Great Emblem and Royal Survey.

Six withdrawals left a field of fourteen to line up for the High Weight Handicap. After a fine finishing run on Saturday, when he won well, Trishna carried £663, the second favourite, Stonehenge, having £453 on his chance, while another to get good backing was Glenstar, £406. The winner turned up in Luminary, who was fourth fancy, with £229. Luminary at once took up the role of pacemaker, and led past the stand from Patutahi, _ Stonehenge, Bizarro, Glenstar, Kairurl, Kamehameha, Dark Prince, Quincoma and St Ames. Along the back Luminary still made the play in front, being half a dozen lengths out from Patutahi, Stonehenge, Bizarro, Kairuri, St Ames, Trishna and Quincoma, who were racing as named, with Ruby Dawn a long way back, last. Across the top Luminary was leading, well clear of Patutahi and Stonehenge (racing together), St Ames and Glenstar (together), Trishna and Bizarro (together), with Quincoma at _the head of the others. Luminary led Into the straight from Stonehenge, Patutahi, Trishna and Glenstar, and, holding his position in the run home. Luminary won by a length and a half from Patutahi, with Stonehenge a neck away. Then followed Trishna, Glenstar, St Ames, Bizarro, Quincoma, Kamehameha, Star Comet and Dark Prince.

In a field of seven for the Stanley Handicap, backers made a poor selection when thev went solidly for Gay Idea. Ridden by Voitre, the filly carried £B2B, and then there was a drop to £669, the amount entrusted to Biddy’s Bov. Red Lion was third fancy, with £4OB, the winner, Carl Idem, carrying £351. Red Lion was first out, followed by De Aka, Currajong, and Carl Idem. Gay Idea ran through smartly and joined Red Lion, the pair leading along the back from Biddy’s Boy, Carl Idem, Currajong, De Aka, and Tambourine. Across the top Red Lion had just a shade the best of Gay Idea, with Biddy’s Boy, Carl Idem, Currajong, De Aka and Tambourine next. Red Lion was first to turn for home, but he faded out, and Carl Idem came with a good run to win nicely by a length and a half from Biddy s Boy, with Tambourine half a length away third. Red Lion was next, followed by Gay Idea, Currajong and De Aka.

FEILDING RACES.

Won by two lengths, four lengths between second and third Time —2min 57 2-ssec. NOVICE STAKES, Of 125 sovs. Six furlongs. I—Pewa, S.S 1 7 —llinewai, S.S f 11— Laconic, S.S ° Scratched—Scales. Won by two lengths, length between second and third. Time—lmin 17 2-ssec. ST ANDREW’S HANDICAP, Of 300 sovs. Nine furlongs. 1— Silvermine, 8.8 1 2 Arrow Lad, 7.10 2 5 Shrewd, 7.13 3 Scratched: Mendip. Won by a neck, five lengths between second and third. Time—lmin 56 4-ssec.
