ERIN’S FORTUNE WINS FORBURY HANDICAP

GREAT LOGAN IS SECOND WITH SUNNY 808 THIRD

Alison Cup Goes To Sargon At Takapuna; Feilding Cup To Ruanui.

WITH THREE race meetings in the Dominion, two of them of major importance, sportsmen had their attention divided to-day. At Forbury, chief interest was centred in the Forbury Handicap run over 2 miles. Erin’s Fortune was the victor with Great Logan second. Sunny Bob was third. At Takapuna the Alison Cup was won by Sargon, with Eager Rose second. At Feilding the Cup was won by Ruanui, with Blimp second and Lady Pam third.

In the Suburban Handicap; although Welcome Guy went away somewhat slowly, he quickly got a good position and two furlongs from home drew away and won easily. Todd Lonzia, who was second favourite, trotted soundly, but covered a lot of extra ground. Rapture went better than on the first day, but failed at the entrance to the straight. Merrijigs went fast "for a mile. The winner had an easy victory. Herod and Great - Chenault monopolised the betting in the Advance Handicap, and the pair had the race to themselve# at the finish. Great Chenault made a bad beginning, but J. J. Kennerley, who drove him, put the two-year-old on his feet before sending him along. Although he had a bad run, he showed exceptional speed along the back stretch, and wore down Herod at the end. Willie Derby showed some form for a mile,, and Scotty Bingen went a useful race. Madam Locando stayed on better than on the first day. Holly Bank, who finished fourth, raced up to form. In the Empire Handicap in a field of five Royal Comrade was backed as though he could not be beaten, but before the straight was reached he was well beaten. There was a continuous delay at the start and eventually MacDillon got away on the move, which gave him an easy victory in a poor race. Brook Pointer paced soundly in second place all the way, but Bingen Patch and Liberal were outclassed. Red Shadow, who was favourite for the Brighton Handicap, won in decisive fashion, although he had to race round the field for the greater part of the journey. Holly Bank paced soundly all the way, but had no chance with the winner. Real Girl finished fast and got third after a bad run. It was a capital race for second and third places, but the winner got home decisively, without an effort, in fast time. In the Forbury Handicap, pacing in; much better form than on the first day, Erin’s Fortune, who was favourite for the Forbury Handicap, won in decisive fashion. Great Logan staj-ed on better than usual and was second. Grand Light broke before half the distance was covered and stopped Wrackeen and Steel All. The last-named came fast in the final stages. Arikitoa did not stay, but Sunny Bob went a much better race than on the first day. Grand Light fell in his preliminary, and, breaking in the race, was pulled up. Stanley T. was a hot favourite in the Victoria Handicap, but two furlongs from home he broke. After going away better, Fifa led till well in the straight, when White Satin, who had been in second position, drew away and won rather easily. Fifa went a fine race, and just failed in the concluding stages. Surprise Journey went his best race to date, and finished on well. Len Wood broke up, and Kyra did not race up to expectations. Trampcrisp, although trotting steadily, found the pace too fast.

In the Maiden Stakes, Cross Stitch, Dayborn, Holly Holm, Karangapai, Loving Cup, and Valmarie were scratched- When the machine closed Operatic (£1024), Chief Joy (£775), and Gay Idea (£650) carried the bulk of the money. Chief Joy, Operatic, Gay Idea apd Camp Princess led round the back. Then came Merry Lu and Tui Mint. In the run to the post, Chief Joy maintained his advantage and won by a quarter of a length from Camp Princess, who beat Operatic by a neck. Gay Idea was fourth. Then came Tui Mint, Royal Survey, Spring Song, Great Emblem, Smithfield, Royal Menu and Merry Lu. Brampton, Lost Comet and St Ames were defections in the Tiri Highweight. Most money came for Trishna (£671), Claremore (£600), and Sleepy Sol (£461). Across the top, the leaders were Patutahi, Luminary, and Ruby Dawn, who were followed by Sleepy Sol, Armenia and Claremore. Sleepy Sol took charge on entering the straight with Patutahi and Glenstar next. Then came Luminary, Trishna, Stonehenge, Kairuri and Claremore Sleepy Sol weakened in the rim home and Trishna, finishing on strongly, got the verdict by threequarters of a length from Glenstar, with Sleepy Sol half a length away. Stonehenge was fourth. Then came Patutahi, Luminary, Kairuri, Glena Bay and King Swift. When the field paraded for the Borough Handicap, Flying Prince and Cynthia N. were missing, and Tenakoe (£1273) was made favourite, the next in demand being Nancy Lee (£753) and Sir Russell (£543). The •winner, White Wings, carried (£377) and paid a nice dividend. Tenakoe ran to the front crossing the top, his nearest attendants being Sir Russell, White Wings and Nancy Lee, with Branson and Honiton close up. Sir Russell took charge as they turned for home, with White Wings, Tenakoe, Nancy Lee, Branson and Honiton following. Sir Russell' failed to see it out, and White Wings beat him home by a length and a half, with Honiton half a head away. Branson was fourth. Then came Nancy Lee, Tenakoe. Ti Tree, Spring Abbey, Imperial Prince and Good Bo:, r . Defections in the Takapuna Plate were Lucky Alice, Sea Song, Tambourine, Principal, Camp Princess, Jaeldy Karo and Orapai. Havaspot (£1117) was a solid favourite, with Biddy’s Boy (£729) and Awamutu (£532) also in demand, while the winner, Volimond, carried £432 and Tetrachate, who ran second, carried £230. There was a false start. At the second start Havaspot followed Tradesman into the straight, with King Ford and Tetrachate all in line. Then came Volimond, Karangapai and Biddy’s Boy. Volimond challenged in the run home and came through to win by half a length from Tetrachate, with Karangapai a neck away. Rosshire was fourth, and then came Havaspot and Tradesman. Nancy Lee and Royal Doulton were not saddled up for the Alison Cup, leaving eight candidates to contest the chief event of the day. The popular fancies were Eager Rose (£11945) and Sargon (£1191), with True Blood (£946) also in

request. Five furlongs from home. Eager Rose ran into the lead, with Sargon and Flying Prince close up. Then came Bennie, Gorinax, Desert Glow, True Blood and Nassock. Of 150 sovs. Six furlongs. 2 Orapai, 8.0 1 6 Golden Shadow, 7.9 2 B—Arrowhead, 7.3 3 notes ON THE RACING. (Special to -the “ Star.”) FEILDING, November 29. Two beautifully fine days greatly improved conditions for the opening of the Feilding Jockey Club’s spring meeting, and the track was in much better order than it promised to be early in the week. It was, however, still somewhat yielding. The attendance was not up to last year’s, the Club’s Jubilee year, but it was, nevertheless, satisfactory. Otairi returned to the batten game in the Waituna Hurdles, after a long absence in which all of I-is racing was on the fiat, and, giving a faultless display of jumping, fairly outclassed the opposition, and won very easily. He was never further back than third or fourth, and after taking the lead from Royal Damon at five furlongs, had the race always in his keeping. Disrank showed an improvement in his running as compared with his one effort at Riccarton, and he made a big effort to get to Otairi over the last half-mile, but he could make very little impression on the leader, and was two lengths away at the end. Shining Armour, after holding his position in the middle of the field most of the way, passed several tiring horses in the straight to finish third six lengths back. Call Again, Novar and Mid were doing the best of the others over the final stages. Royal Damon and Royal Acre failed after going well for part of the way. The form of Democratic, Otairi’s stable-mate, was in striking contrast to his Trentham efforts. Cloyne fell at the second fence, when in the lead, and k r • rider (W. Horne) broke his collarbone. Both divisions of the Aorangi Trial Plate were won from end to end, and in each case the winner was called on to withstand a determined challenge in the straight, and succeeded in doing so only by a narrow margin. Knollmere, who scored in the second section, probably gave a more striking performance than the winner of the first section, Seneschal, and his time was over a second better. Seneschal is a three-year-old chestnut gelding by Chief Ruler from El Vent, and is trained at Marton by F. C. F. M’Kay. The only one to trouble him in the race was the warm favourite, Laconic, but he held on to his lead to win by a head. Baskier was a poor third in this division, being two lengths further back. The best of the others were Catherine of Aragon, Myola, Tar Baby, and Protomint. Knollmere, who won the second division at his first start, is a three-year-old b.own gelding by Grand Court from Orozino, and is thus closely related to Desert Gold. He is trained at Wanganui by W. H. Dwyer. Pewa, whom he beat ’ a neck, had a lot of ground to make up in the straight, and was a bit unlucky. Beverage was a r ,or third, four lengths away, and the best of the others were Flute, Queanbeyan, Black Plan, and Futurist. A thrilling finish in which the result was in doubt until the numbers were hoisted was .a feature of the Feilding Cup. Arrowlad attempted to win all the way, but the last furlong found a weakness in his armour and Ruanui, Blimp, Lady Pam and Merry Damon all caught him before the race was over. Ruanui swept down in the straight and beat Blimp, who had lain second, behind Arrowlad, most of the way, but Lady Pam and Merry Damon could not quite get up for a dividend. Ruanui was seven horses back half a mile from home, but he improved from that point and would have been unlucky to lose. Blimp went one of his good races, being particularly well ridden by S. Gerrand, who did not make him cover an inch more ground than was necessary. L a< iy P am would have paid a dividend if Reed had moved on

her earlier. In -the straight Merry Damon came away with a characteristic run from well back and was going better at the end than anything except Lady Pam. Shrewd made a fine spurt round the field over the middle part Of the race, and although he failed at the close is worth remembering. Grecian and My Own were a little disappointing, as each had every chance, but could not use it. In spite of the general belief that the three-year-olds would play a deciding part in the decision of and Autopay were this year’s hopes, but they could not bring to an end that long chain of failures, both Lady Quex and Supremacy, the only members of the older brigade in the race, proving much superior to them. Lady Quex was well back over the earl} r part, but improved throughout, and after following Souchong, Supremacy, Autopay and Gesture into the straight came home like an arrow and beat Supremacy by a length, Gesture being another length away and Kahikatoa fourth. Supremacy had every chance. Gesture could not foot the pace set by Supremacy. Autopay hung out on the turn, but was not class enough. Kahikatoa went a good race, and Tenterden was finishing strongly, after losing a good early position.
