“LIGHT SHINES IN ONE WAY ONLY.”
MAGISTRATE REFERS TO CROSSING-KEEPER’S LAMP.
When John Skurr #- a farmer, of Oxford, appeared at ‘the Magistrate’s Court this morning, charged with attempting to pass over the Sockburn railway crossing when the line was not clear, occasion was taken by- the Magistrate, Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M., to make a few remarks regarding the lights carried by crossing-keepers at night. “The light used by crossing-keepers shines on one side of the line only-,” said Mr Mosley-, “and on an occasion recently’- I* myself, if I had not been exercising the greatest care, would have been on a crossing when the line was not clear. The crossing-keeper’s light was not showing in my direction until I was almost on the line. This entails great care on the part of motorists at all crossings, but one does not have to recall all the serious smashes of recent date to stress the seriousness of this offence.” Skurr, who stated that he did not see the crossing-keeper’s light, was fined £2.
