SCHOOL AND PLAYGROUND.

(BY

“DEMONI.”)

Bast Saturday, School I had the bye, whilst St Bede’s I were drawn to meet St Andrew’s I. This match, however, did nut eventuate and, in consequence, only one of the senior teams played a matuh in tho last round. This was tho game between College J and Christchurch, which resulted in a rather severe defeat for tho school fifteen by : 6 points to 11. Christchurch owed their victory to the bustling tactics of their -vanguard who frequently broke through from the loose, several tries resulting from forward rushes. The opening stages of tho first spell were in favour of Christchurch, who twice broke through from the loose, notching a couple of tries under the posts. Both were converted, and then, after loos© play, Buchanan by a good kick down the line put College on the attack. M’Cracken had a fruitless pot at goal but, in Tho ensuing play, Mon* tenth picked up and dashed over for a try near the corner, 10-3. Christchurch attacked again and. from tight play on College line their half-back secured ed. A U naity° enabled Chrfstchurcdi to add to their total, but after a good deal of even play In which both backs and forwards did their share, M'Cracken retaliated, landing a good goal from a penalty, 16-6. Shortly before half time, the Christchurch forwards again broke away and scored near the corner;. This try was converted. The spell ended with the score 21-6 in favour of the Cl L b arVrU *ho second spell Christchurch scoured another converted try. and although good play by Morris and Shield put College* on the offensive for a. while, Christchurch again booted through and, after .a period of pressure, brought the total to 31-6. College now’ attacked’ and the ball oh mo to Shield, who scored after an excellent run. M’Cracken added the major points. 31-11. College pressed for a time, but in Die -concluding stage.* Christchurch again broke through to .*core and cohvvrt, tire final whistle sounding with the total 36-11 in their favour.

M’Craeken, at second five-eighths, and Shield, at centre three-quarter, were the pi* k of tho College rearguard. Rolleston showed pleasing form on the loft wing and Morris played satisfactorily at full-back. Although badly out-weight-ed. the College forwards played pluckily throughout. Harding and Pitt were tho best of the vanguard, and Arthur was another honest toiler, especially in the tight work. Referee: Mr J. Gray. School A 5; Technical 3.
