October 4 —Waimate to Christchurch Road Race (cashR # Jfltairehau Club's Race. The Mairehau Sports Club held a road race at Mairehau ou Saturday afternoon. The roads wore i:i good racing orcU-r, and a small field of t wenty-on© riders faced the starter. Additional interest was given to the race owing to the fact that Harry Watson, who, two years ago. represented the Dominion in ihe big Tour de France road race, was competing. L. W. Ilil] was oil scratch with Watson, and the pair rode well Togthor; although they did not pick up the leading bundles, they finished close iP With five miles to go, V. Turner and R. E. Turner, Peek and Fleming led by eight seconds from R. G. Watson, with Bearman, Johnston, Briggs and Anderson 2min 15sec behind; 4 B seo later W. K. Weir, Farmer, Frandsen, Sowden and H. Crofts passed, followed l?sec later by M'Kaskell, Silvester, H. G. Watson, Hill and It. Weir. The back-murk- • rs were 3min 18see behind the loaders. Peek won easily by several seconds from V. Farmer, a "prominent amateur rider who recorded some splendid performances in Dunedin, -was amongst, the .starters in last Saturday’s race. Farmer started off the 3min mark in company with X. .T. Muir, A. U. Frandsen, and W. K. Weir. He rode well throughout the race and, witli live miles to go, was well up. Farmer should figure prominently in the longer distance races. :: W. K. Weir made his first appearance in a cycle race this season. Bast season Weir gave up cycling in favour of running, and lie appeared on a lew occasions as a middle-distance runner. The call of the open road proved too strong for him, arul he will again be seen in action in the coming big road races. m st N. J. Muir, who rode prominently last season, was a starter on Saturday. .He apparently was not fit, and did not complete a, lap with his co-markers. :: :: M M. Reck, the winner, is riding very consistently this season, and lias been placed on the road previously. He is a strong rider, and Icivvb Ms co-markers to finish alone. Peek intends taking part in the lons-diatoico events, and, being a strong rider, should be well in tho limelight. :: A'. Turner, second place, riding from the limit, registered a creditable performance. He was unlucky in meeting a rider of the calibre of Peek in the final stages of the race. :: :: R. O. Watson, of Oust, finished third. In company with the Turner brothers, he led throughout the race, only to be beaten at the end. With five miles to go, ho lost liia chain, but dismounted and replaced it, and pluckily continued to finish in third place. He , will race in the Rakaia, Southbridge and later on in the Waimate to Christchurch road race. Rukey’s entry in the cash ranks should make the racing more interesting, especially the Waimate race. This long distance event should suit the big amateur rider. Several years ago, as an inexperienced cash rider, Bukey registered several fine performances. He was later reinstated an mi amateur and, during the past two or three years, he has put up some truly remarkable performances over long distances. :> Bast week Mr P. O. Lucas, the secretary of the New Zealand Athletic and Cycling- Union, North Canterbury Centro, motored to "Waimate to make ar- ! rangements tor the big race which is to take place on October 4. Throughout 1 the course of over J4O miles, the roads were in good ord<f, only a few bad : patches being encountered. Arrangements were made for a. milk station and check station at Timaru, and also 'at Geraldine. Rangitata. Ashburton and Dunsandel. The North Canterbury Centre of the New Zealand Athletic and Cycling Union will meet to-night and finalise matters in connection with the prize list. :: :: :: T«. W. Hill did Tint make his attempt to lower the Christchurch to Governor’s Bay record last Sunday owing to the bad state of rho roads. As he intends going to Kaikoura with If. G. Watson during the coming week-end. the attempt will be mad© on August 30. :: P. G. Hack, who four years ago rode weil in the Timaru to Christchurch ro. d race, has again decided to have a riao m this year’s big Waimate to Christchurch road race. Hack will start in the Christchurch Club’s event next Saturday. "W. J. Rambert son, the ex-amateur who was disqualified last March for SvirHSr^"* to be. held to-night. k :: The amateurs held another road race on Saturday afternoon, when the Papanui Sports Club held a thirty miles road race in which thirty riders started. B. G. Bukey and W. F. Wileookson were the back-markers, on the half-minute mark. The limit was liberal, llmin. The winner, 11. M. Stewart (llmin) showed a great improvement on previous efforts. Ho has not been placed in a race previously. F. C. Muir (llmin) finished second.
