FINANCES STATED AT UNEMPLOYMENT MEETING.
The finance committee of the Citizens’ Unemployment Committee met to-day. There were present: Messrs E. TI. Andrews (chairman), R. T. Ecroyd, R. T. Bailey, W. W. Scarff, J. S. Barnett, Mrs A. I. Fraer, and the honorary secretary (Mr P. R. Climie). The financial statement showed subscriptions during the week amounting to £l9l Is sd, including £l5O from the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club. Payments, which included £25 to the Sydenham relief depot, totalled £35 Bs, leaving an amount in hand of £SS7 16s at July 2S. This amount included £432 2s 7d, balance in hand on July 28. The Lyttelton Borough Council wrote regretting that it had no relief work to put in hand at present Up to Saturday last £292 16s 5d had been paid out for wages; £l6O 11s 5d to local men and £132 5s to returned soldiers from Christchurch. Of the last-named amount £66 2s 6d had been provided by the Returned Soldiers’ Association. In addition, the council was employing more casual men than ever before. Several of the casuals should have been dispensed with before, but the council, realising the position, was still retaining them. During the past three months 45 per cent of the council’s estimated revenue for the year had been paid out in wages alone.
