CHURCH FUNDS AND UNEMPLOYED NEEDS.
COMMITTEE ASKS FOR SUNDAY COLLECTIONS. Church finances in relation* to the relief of unemployment were' discussed at the meeting of the finance committee of the Citizens’ Unemployment Committee to-day. The committee decided to ask each church to have a collection taken up in aid of unemployment funds. When Mr R. J. Ecroyd suggested that the church should be asked to take up a collection each week, Mrs A. I. Fraer objected. She said that the churches were behind with their own finances and could not stand any further defection of amount to other causes. It was stated by members that about half a dozen churches, including several Presbyterian, had taken up a collection in response to the committee’s circular acme time ago. It was felt that those which had not asked their congregations to subscribe should be asked to do something. Air W, W. Scarf! stated that the churches were bodies which did not get very large congregations, as people did not attend services as they should. The Rugby Union, for instance, drew large crowds, but those in attendance v/erc not asked for subscriptions. Mrs Fraer: Yes. We have collection boxes at Lancaster Park. The chairman (Mr E !I. Andrews) stated that almost all churches had their own funds for the relief of distress. Mr Ecroyd amended his motion to read that the committee should ask the churches to take up a collection for the relief of unemployment. This was cairicd.
