FOOTBALL PLAYER FATALLY INJURED.

MATCH IN ASHBURTON MARRED BY FATALITY.

James Farr, aged twenty-five, captain of the Old Boys’ Football Club, Ashburton, died on Saturday night as the result of injuries received near the end of the match with Mayfield that afternoon. He received a bad knock on the head and was rendered unconscious. The blow burst a blood vessel in his head and he died shortly after. He was in the act of picking up the ball when the accident happened. The game had only a few minutes to run. Deceased, who had been employed on the clerical staff of the Ashburton Magistrate’s Court for several years, was highly respected and popular with all who made his acquaintance both in and out of business. In Rugby circles he was equally popular. He was an ex-pupil of the Waitaki Boys’ High School, and a son of Mrs I. Farr, of Oamaru. An inquest was opened yesterday at Ashburton before the District Coroner, Mr R. Clark, and adjourned sine die after evidence of identification had been given.

SOCCER PLAYER HURT.

A. Wilson, inside-left for Rangers, was carried off the field at English Park in an unconscious condition just before the end of the first spell of the ThistleRangers match on Saturday. A melee occurred in front of the Thistle goal. Several players jumped for the ball, and fell in a heap. Wilson was injured and rendered unconscious by a knock. He was attended by an ambulance man in the dressing-shed. BOY’S HIP FRACTURED. Per Press Association. WOODVILLE, July 26. A lad named Bernie Ebbett, of Woodvine, aged fifteen years, while playing football against the Pahiatua District High School this morning, had a hip fractured and after being attended by a doctor, was conveyed in an ambulance to the Dannevirke Hospital. He is a son of Mr F. Ebbett, of Woodville. WOMAN DIES AFTER ACCIDENT IN FACTORY. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, July 27. Elvina Nesbit, aged nineteen years, a resident of Morningside, received severe head injuries when she was struck by a falling stack of trays while working at the Empire Box Company’s premises yesterday. She was taken to hospital and died this morning.
