RUGBY FOOTBALL.

Old Soys Defeat Mayfield. Bright warm sunshine prevailed for the series of matches conducted by the Ashburton Rugby Union on Saturday afternoon and the playing area on the show grounds was in excellent order. The attendance was larger than usual. A radio receiving set kept those present in touch with the progi-ess of the Rugby test match in Auckland. Interest centred chiefly in the Old Boys v. Mayfield senior match which proved to be one of the most interesting and exciting inter-club matches played on the show grounds this season. Tho final stages of the second spell were hard and fast and tho open nature of the play roused the onlookers to a high pitch of enthusiasm. The game ended in a win for Old Boys by 16 points to 15. Hampstoaa v. Rakaia. Hampstead defeated Rakaia, at Eakaia, by 14 points to 6. Tho,teams wore well matched. Junior Grade, Playing at Springburn, Methven defeated the home team by 11 points to Old Boys defeated Mayfield by six’ points to 3 at the Show Grounds. The match between Mount Somers and Allenton resulted in a win for the former by 17 points to 4. Playing at the Show Grounds, Rakaia lefeated Lowcliffe by 20 points to 0. Other Grades. Third Grade—Hampstead 0, Technical Old Boys 0: Tinwald 21, Allenton 0; Old Boys 6, Rakaia 3. Fourth Grade—Technical A 47, High School 0; Methven 6, Hampstead 0.
