Parker, Registry for Servants, Cathedral Square. 55 5? M Late Telegrams.—Wellington, July 26. It is rumoured that Mr Stafford intends to join issue with the Government on the question of allowing Provincial Governments any control over, or voice in expenditure under, the! colonial immigration and public works scheme. Mr Hall on Farming.—The Hon J. Hall is very fond (this session) of alluding to the fact that he represents a farming district, and appears to think —with Mr Stevens, by the way—that because his constituents happen to be farmers, he must know all about farming, including the grain trade. To show how much truth there is in this notion, we find that in his speech on the Financial Statement, Mr Hall made the following astounding remark: “We have lost the Australian market, for those colonies supply themselves, and the only market for our surplus wheat is now the Mother Country.” If Mr Hall's views on the inexpediency of the proposed Government scheme for immigration and public works are as correct as his ideas on the Australian corn market, they are not worth much to the Heathcote farmers or anybody else.
